Loden’s Wheel Factor
Quote/Information
Prevalent Factors
Sharanda Jones Case
1.Geographic Location
“Kaufman County Sheriff's Department conducted a large drug sweep
in the city of Terrell, about 30 miles east of Dallas, netting more than 100 people, all of them black” (Sari & Nikki, 2015).
2.Socioeconomic Status
"I began dealing drugs out of desperation to be able to sufficiently support myself and my family," Jones wrote. “She started working when she was 14, had an entrepreneurial streak, opening her own hair salon and a burger joint before starting a Southern-style restaurant in Dallas with a woman from Terrell who was a Dallas police officer” (Sari & Niki, 2015).
3.Race
“Her case began in November 1997 when the Kaufman County Sheriff's Department conducted a large drug sweep in the city of Terrell, about 30 miles east of Dallas, netting more than 100 people, all of them black” (Sari & Nikki, 2015).
4.Ethnicity
“Most are poor, and four in five are African American or Hispanic” (Sari & Nikki, 201t5).
5.Gender
“Because of her role as a middle woman between a cocaine buyer and supplier, Jones was accused of being part of a "drug conspiracy" and should have known that the powder would be converted to crack
- triggering a greater penalty” (Sari & Nikki, 2015).
Additional Factors
Additional Resources
1.Political Events
“Federal sentencing guidelines in similar drug cases have changed, to end disparities in how the courts treat crack cocaine vs. powder cocaine. And, since a 2005 Supreme Court decision, judges have much greater discretion when they mete out punishment. In the past decade, they gave lower sentences by an average of one-third the guideline range, according to the U.S. Sentencing Commission” (Martyn, 2015).
2.Family Status
“Jones had grown up poor, raised by her grandmother after her mother was left quadriplegic by a car crash” (Sari & Nikki, 2015). 3.Experiences
“In 1999, a jury convicted Jones on one drug conspiracy count for buying cocaine powder in Houston and then selling the powder to a dealer in Terrell, who then converted the powder to crack” (Sari &
Nikki, 2015).

Reflection: The information I found did not easily align with the factors I initially predicted. For instance, I predicted that gender was going to be one of the main factors that influenced her interaction with the criminal justice system, but it seems like it did not matter as much as her socioeconomic status or race. It was harder to find examples for factors like her education and how it can affect her, but I did not find that information in both articles, so I think it did not play a role in how her case was handled. I found multiple examples of factors such as socioeconomic status and family status. It was easier to find these examples because it was the biggest factor that influenced her interaction with the criminal justice system.
