African American history. Using his own experiences in black churches, Ailey created stories for his audience. On stage, gospel music like "Fix Me Jesus," "Wade in the Water," "I Wanna Be Ready," and more is performed. The work of Ailey became a political statement during the time of segregation in 1960. The African American culture was expressed through Ailey's work "Revelations." With every movement, dancers expressed both pain and joy. It was the creator's intention to uplift his culture and give them hope that justice will prevail. "Revelations" was created in 1960, four years after segregation ended in 1964. Culture has changed in many ways since then. As a way of raising awareness of African Americans' injustice, Ailey used his work. His work provided a platform for people to see how people of certain skin colors are treated and how their lives are lived. African Americans are still facing injustice in 2023. He did not stop this issue, but he brought awareness to it and still uses it as a platform to speak out against injustice.
