IMPACTING FUTURE YOUTH Abstract Children in foster care need to be heard, need to be shown empathy, and need to know that they are important, just like all other youth. Youth in foster care often times come into care with trauma, many have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, along with a high Adverse Childhood Experience score. The youth in placement need someone that will guide them on the right path in life and become a leader within this world that we all live in. Pursuing becoming a more multicultural practitioner-scholar will let the author use the finest methods appropriate for each youth’s needs while taking into account their cultural identity and in the end, increase the success of their overall life. 2
IMPACTING FUTURE YOUTH Impacting Future Youth This author has a vision, one to create an understanding that today’s youth truly matter. Many youths, especially those in the foster care system, do not think that they matter. By utilizing his current position, as a Foster Care Program Director, his hope is to have the youth in the “system” know that they matter and that they are the future of this world. To make this dream of a reality, the author must continually learn, be ethical, learn new cultures, and eliminate the stigma that the foster care system has on the youth. The foster care system does not discriminate against age, religion, race, sex, or culture, and it has, at one point, had one child from each of these backgrounds involved in the system. These elements influence a person's viewpoint, which in turn influences their life, well into their adulthood. The author’s focus is on childhood and adolescent development. Role as a Multicultural Practitioner-Scholar The phrase "practitioner scholar" defines a standard of professional excellence based on theory and research, guided by practical knowledge, and inspired by moral principles, political convictions, and ethical behavior (McClintock, 2004). This author has a goal to accomplish, one that cannot be met overnight and will take many years, it will be met with struggles, heartache, and tears. He is hopeful that this graduate program will help him reach his goal. This author has only just started to explore my role as a practitioner-scholar, and it is one that he wants to explore more. The author has the aspiration to become a great researcher in how to help youth overcome their struggles and use this research in everyday life and dealings with the youth. The more he focuses on being a practitioner-scholar, the more he is learning through research, discussion, and study. The author is not just learning about his career through this, he is learning more about who he is, what he wants, and where he sees myself. 3

IMPACTING FUTURE YOUTH Vision This author hopes, most importantly his vision, through being a multicultural practitioner-scholar, is that he can use his knowledge gained to help those youth who need it most, those that feel abandoned, or feel that they do not know where to turn. Children in foster care suffer from a great deal of trauma. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is more prevalent in youth who are involved with foster care and the courts than those that are not (McGuire et al., 2021) . The author believes, that with focusing on the PTSD aspect of youth in care, the Adverse Childhood Experiences play a role in this. It is shown that youth with a higher Adverse Childhood Experiences effect their adult health and behavior (Leitch, 2017). It is further worth noting that, “adults with the highest level of ACEs had a life expectancy 20 years less than those without high levels of ACEs” (Leitch, 2017). Individuals, this includes the clients and service providers, can start to learn to evaluate the status of their nervous systems and begin to focus their attention on using everyday skills that support positive influence and strengthen resilience through the use of non-clinical, skills-based approaches which guide in helping children begin to overcome their trauma in a more positive way (Leitch, 2017). The author’s goal is to stay where he is currently employed, as a Program Director for a local foster care agency. He wants to begin to develop more skills, and more knowledge to help those that he serves. To effectively do this, the author needs to continue to develop my skills on multiculturalism youth. One way to help to ease the trauma with multiculturalism youth is to show empathy. Empathy will help to establish a successful therapeutic alliance and patients report having a positive experience when they feel heard, comfortable, and able to be more forthcoming (Kaluzeviciute, 2020). Empathy is truly important when we talk about the PTSD and ACE scores in our foster youth as professionals might benefit from instruction on how to 4
IMPACTING FUTURE YOUTH recognize the foster youths needs and respond empathically to make critical judgments that could have a significant impact on the success of their lives later on into adulthood (Kaluzeviciute, 2020). Conclusion Being able to support, listen, and interact with the youth in foster care not only makes this authors vision meaningful, but it also makes it true dream. He truly believes that it makes the youths life even better for them to have someone to talk to, have them feel like they are being listened, it will also have them feel heard, understood, and feel as though they truly do matter. The youth in placement have had so much trauma in their lives that they really need someone who will be the one figure in their life that can help them. In terms of confidence, this author believes that with more knowledge and with his dedication, he can accomplish this. Being a multicultural psychology practitioner-scholar will aide in his skills to have more foster youth open up to him, be more forthcoming, and realize that there are people out there that care for them and want to see them succeed in their life. Foster children receive a more stable and safer environment when they are in care and they thrive when their needs are met (Steenbakkers et al., 2017). Being able to provide the youth with a safe environment, and be that one reliable person in their life will help to aide in them being able to thrive and improve their overall well-being. 5
