It is no secret that African Americans and Latinos have a significantly higher prevalence of obesity. From a prevention standpoint, their children should be a high priority. There are many places to consider outside of the home where children spend time that may have an impact on their health and food choices. These places include schools and after school facilities, FBOs, and clubs or sports where snacks may be provided. Faith-based organizations (FBOs) are a great avenue to address and deliver health education for adolescents in their congregation and communities due to their already established trust and relationships within the community. A recent study reports that while FBOS want to help, they need support from subject matter experts
to ensure they have proper information and resources.
1 FBOs will not only be able to target children for prevention though, but they will also be able to address obesity in the adults in the community too. When public health experts are considering the development of outreach events with FBOs and interventions to address obesity, it is imperative that the diversity of the community burdened by this condition and develop programs that are tailored all the different members of the community, whether religious , racial/ethnic, or health differences exists.
2
Programs may benefit from utilizing multilevel approaches to move away from behavioral changes to a more systems-based framework to address and adress the racial and ethnic disparities of obesity in the United States.
