A fitness assessment serves two main purposes: collecting baseline data and establishing a foundation for developing customized exercise programs and goals. By gathering and evaluating information from various sources, a personal trainer can gain a comprehensive understanding of their client. This process and data can help identify areas of potential injury and set appropriate starting points for exercise intensities and volumes based on the client's fitness goals and desired outcomes (Coburn & Malek, 2012). One component that should be included in a comprehensive fitness assessment is the client's resting heart rate. Using the client's resting heart rate can help determine whether or not to continue with the training. If a client has an abnormally high resting heart rate, special care must be taken to modify their training program not to strain their heart and arteries unnecessarily. In addition, measuring a client's resting heart rate is useful for gauging their cardiovascular fitness since a lowered resting heart rate over time due to training indicates increased cardiovascular fitness (Bumgardner, 2021). For someone with chronic illnesses, there are additional areas that would be crucial to consider in
a fitness assessment, such as their medical history, any medications taken, physical limitations, and their emotional well-being. Understanding the client's medical history and current health status is essential to developing a safe and effective exercise program. This information can help the fitness professional identify potential risks and develop a program appropriate for the client's specific health needs. The client's medications and possible side effects can impact their ability to exercise safely. Chronic illnesses may cause physical limitations, such as joint pain, muscle weakness, or fatigue. They can also have a significant impact on a person's emotional well-being.
It is essential to consider the client's mental health and any stressors that may impact their ability to engage in exercise. Assessment tests may need to be modified due to any of these factors. References
