Unhealthy work environments within healthcare settings have resulted in absenteeism, higher stress levels, and ineffective collaboration and teamwork among healthcare professionals (Huddleston, Mancini, & Gray, 2017). Conversely, healthy work environments have been described as having policies, procedures, and processes clearly, outlined to empower nurses to meet organizational goals, to achieve satisfaction in their jobs, and to retain nurses in healthcare settings (Huddleston et al., 2017). Key insights from the scholarly resources selected are nurse leaders established the importance of appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, skilled communications and direct care nurses established the importance of genuine teamwork and physical and psychological safety (Huddleston et al, 201). Supportive leadership behavior appears to be an important determinant of health in the workplace (Schmidt, Loerbroks, Herr, Wilson, jarczok, Litaker, Mauss Bosch, & Fischer, 2014). Leader Using Behavior and Skills.
The current manager within the organization of employment does use skilled communications and emphasizes teamwork. As a float RN, the manager promotes the appropriate staffing among the other managers on the units. As a result of management communicating with other managers on the units regarding staffing, the units try to staff appropriately which includes not giving floaters the worst assignment. Unfair assignments can cause an unhealthy work environment. Leadership also communicates all information or policy changes that the floors get during staff meetings. Access to information, support of innovation, and learning orientation are part of organizational culture and climate (Duggan, Aisaka, Tabak, Smith, Erwin, & Brownson, 2015).
Effective Skills and Practice
Leadership using skilled communications, regarding staffing has impacted the organization in a positive way for everyone. Originally, some charge nurses were not being fair with assignments regarding high acuity patients. The challenge has been the mindset of some leaders and charge RNs have regarding float pool RNs. Some feel since float RNs are making extra money to float, then tougher assignments should be given, which does create a healthy environment. That does not promote teamwork and it jeopardizes physical and psychological safety. Skilled communication among leadership has made appropriate staffing better.
