Addressing the issue of healthcare affordability within the hospital setting requires a multifaceted approach. With various strategies that can be utilized
to address such problems, it will take a disciplined approach involving numerous sectors of healthcare (Riley, 2012).
Proper patient education about the costs of different medical procedures, tests, and treatments empowers them to make informed decisions, potentially leading to more cost-effective choices. Within education, leveraging technology, such as electronic health records (EHRs), telemedicine, and data analytics, can improve coordination of care, reduce administrative costs, and enhance overall healthcare delivery efficiency. Investing in technologies that streamline processes can lead to long-term cost savings (Kumar, 2011). Integration of technology can help alleviate the cost of healthcare as well as the accessibility in instances where patients have difficulties transporting to healthcare institutions for care.
Hospitals can focus on preventive care and population health management to address health issues before they escalate, potentially reducing the need for costly interventions. This proactive approach may involve community outreach programs, health education, and early intervention initiatives (Institute of Health, 2010). Collaborative efforts among healthcare providers, insurers, and policymakers can foster a more integrated and coordinated approach to healthcare delivery. This can lead to better resource allocation and improved cost-effectiveness across the healthcare system.
Addressing the rising cost of healthcare in the hospital setting requires a comprehensive and collaborative effort involving healthcare providers, administrators, policymakers, and patients. By implementing these strategies, hospitals can contribute to a more sustainable and cost-effective healthcare system while focusing on delivering high-quality care.
