1. What has been the main challenges posed by the growing use of healthcare technology in the United States? -One of the main challenges is ensuring the security and privacy of patient data. With the increased digitization of medical records and the use of electronic health systems there is a greater risk of data breaches and unauthorized access to sensitive information. Another challenge is that it can be difficult for different systems to communicate and to merge information seamlessly and this can lead to inefficiencies and gaps in the patients care. There is also a learning curve for healthcare professionals and adapting to new technologies and incorporating it into their workflow. This requires training and ongoing support to ensure that technology is used effectively and safely. 2. List the three IT computerized information systems and how they are used in daily operations of healthcare? -Three commonly used IT computerized systems are the following: EHR (Electronic Health Records) - These are digital versions of patient medical records and they store patient information such as medical history, medications, test results, and treatment plans. They are used in daily operations of health care by improving accessibility of patient data and coordinated care among health care providers. CPOE (Computerized Physician Order Entry) - This allows healthcare providers to enter medical orders electronically which replaced traditional paper based systems. It also reduces errors and enhances efficiency as well as facilitating communication between healthcare providers and other departments such as pharmacies and laboratories. CDSS (Clinical Decision Support Systems) - This provides healthcare professionals with evidence based guidelines, alerts, and reminders at the point of care. It also assists in making informed decisions and improving patient safety. 3. How is the Intranet and Internet used in improving patient’s care? -The Internet is an internal network used within healthcare organizations that allows healthcare professionals to securely access and share information and collaborate on patient care. Through the Internet healthcare providers can access electronic health records, view test results, and exchange information in real time period this promotes efficiency and coordinated care as well as enhancing communication among healthcare teams. The Internet on the other hand expands their reach of patient care beyond the health care facility. It enables patients to access online health resources and education materials as well as telemedicine services. Patients can research their conditions and access support groups as well as communicate with their healthcare providers remotely. The Internet also facilitates by sharing medical knowledge and research among healthcare professionals globally which leads to advancements in treatment options. 4. Research telemedicine (telehealth). Give four facts about telemedicine, discuss impending legislation on standards, and how will it change healthcare. - Four facts about telemedicine go as followed: 1. Remote Access to healthcare: Telemedicine allows patients to access health care services remotely which eliminate the need for in person visits . Through video consultations or virtual visits patients can receive medical advice as well as diagnosis and even treatment from the comfort of their own home. 2. Increased Access to specialists: telemedicine expands access to specialized health care services especially for patients in rural or underserved areas with
telemedicine patients can connect with specialists who may be located far away which reduces the need for travel. 3. Improved convenience and efficiency: Telemedicine offers convenience by eliminating the need for travel and reducing wait times it improves efficiency by streamlining healthcare delivery which allows healthcare providers to see more patients in a shorter amount of time. 4. Remote monitoring and homecare: Telemedicine enables remote monitoring for patients vital signs and health conditions which allows healthcare providers to remote patients health remotely. This can be useful for patients with chronic conditions or those who require ongoing monitoring and care. The changes brought out by telemedicine are significant. It has the potential to improve healthcare accessibility especially for those in remote areas it can enhance patient outcomes by enabling timely interventions and reducing barriers to care. Telemedicine can also contribute to cost saving by reducing unnecessary hospital visits and improving healthcare efficiency. 5. What role does the Food and Drug Administration play in technology diffusion? -The FDA plays a crucial role in technology diffusion by regulating and overseeing the introduction of new medical technologies and devices into the market. They ensure that these technologies meet safety and efficiency standards before they are made available to the public. The FDA also evaluates the data from clinical trials and conducts reviews to assess the benefits and risks of the new technologies which helps protect the public from unsafe or ineffective products and promotes the adoption of beneficial technologies in healthcare. 6. Explain the Safe Medical Devices Act of 1990 and how it affects healthcare today. -The Safe Medical Devices Act of 1990 is an important law that was put into place to ensure the safety and effectiveness of medical devices used in healthcare. It required manufacturers to report injuries, illnesses or deaths associated with its devices to the FDA. This helps identify risks and ensures that appropriate steps are taken to protect the safety of patients. Today this helps by using those very reports to improve medical devices by making them more efficient and safe to use and this brings a continuous advancement on the products as they may be tweaked for better efficiency and safety overtime. 7. What is the responsibility of the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology? - The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has the responsibility of promoting the adoption and use of HIT across healthcare systems. They work to advance the use of EHR as well as other digital health tools to improve patient care and enhance health outcomes. 8. Research the Internet for Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA). Offer valuable information to persuade a physician. It provides financial incentives to eligible healthcare professionals who adopt and demonstrate meaningful use of certified EHR technology. This promotes the use of EHR which can improve health care by enhancing care coordination and reducing medical errors as well as increasing efficiency. By
implementing MI PA, health care providers can benefit from financial incentives while improving the quality and coordination of patient care and encourages the youth to enhance communication and provide better patient outcomes. 9. Research and discuss the role of HITECH Act, electronic health records and meaningful use incentives programs. -The HITECH act Was passed to promote the adoption and meaningful use of EHR's in the United states. It aimed to improve healthcare quality , safety, and efficiency through the use of technology. The meaningful use incentives programs had three stages each with specific objectives and criteria that providers need to meet. The programs focused on areas such as electronic prescribing, clinical decision support, patient engagement, and the exchange of health information. This played a significant role in the transition from paper based records to electronic health records which led to advancements in healthcare technology and improved patient care. 10.Research the National Alliance for Health Information Technology (NAHIT) definition of electronic health record (EHR). -EHR is a digital version of a patient's paper chart. It contains the patient's medical history, diagnosis, medications, treatment plans, immunization records, and more. EHR's are designed to be accessible to authorized healthcare providers and can be securely shared across different healthcare settings. They aim to improve communication as well as coordination in the quality of care by providing A comprehensive and up-to-date view of the patient's health information. 11.Research Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT). Determine its purpose and function in the adoption of electronic health records related to interoperability. - The CCHIT Was an independent nonprofit organization that played a crucial role in the adoption of electronic health records. The purpose of CC HIT was to establish certification criteria and processes for EHR technology. It aimed to ensure that EHR systems met certain standards. CCHT provided a voluntary certification program where EHR vendors could submit their products for evaluation by achieving this certification the HR systems demonstrated their ability to exchange health information with other systems in a secure manner. The certification process conducted by CCC IT helped healthcare providers and organizations make informed decisions when selecting an EHR system. CCHT is no longer active however its work in establishing certification criteria has had a long lasting impact in the adoption and development of EHR technology. 12.Discuss three requirements for physicians and hospitals to meet Meaningful Use in Phase 1 and Phase 2. Three requirements include: 1. Use of Certified EHR technology: Physicians and hospitals were required to use EHR systems that were certified by an authorized certification body such as CC HIT. This ensures that EHR's meet specific standards. 2. Capture and Exchange of clinical data: Meaningful use required healthcare providers to capture and exchange clinical data electronically. This included functionalities like electronic prescribing recording patient demographics and maintaining problem list as well as generating electronic clinical summaries for the patient. 3. It enables us to easily access and share our health information with our healthcare providers which makes it convenient for them to view our health history. 2. Eversense CGM system is a continuous glucose monitoring system that helps individuals with diabetes monitor their blood sugar levels. It consists of a small sensor that is implanted under the skin and a wearable transmitter that communicates with the sensor. This linking allows healthcare providers to access and review a patients glucose data alongside other health information which gives an overall view of the patients health. By linking to health records it allows health care providers in making more informed decisions related to the patients diabetes management plan and can help identify the patterns that the patient may have on a day to day if their glucose level tends to fluctuate.
