National Health issue/ Stressors and its impact on the work setting
The national health issue or stressor for this write-up is health disparities. Health disparities refer
to differences in health outcomes or access to healthcare among different populations (CDC,
2023). Health disparities in a healthcare setting can result in unequal access to quality care and
varied health outcomes among diverse people. This can worsen existing social inequalities and
hinder overall community well-being. Moreover, health disparities cost $42 billion in lowered
productivity yearly in the United States and $93 billion in excess medical costs (National
Conference of State Legislatures, 2021).
The social determinants that might affect health disparities
The social determinants that can significantly affect health disparities include income and
education. For example, lower-income individuals may face challenges accessing healthcare
services or affording preventive measures. Flaubert et al. (2021) described low-income
individuals, people of color, and residents of rural areas in the United States as experiencing a
significant burden of disease and lower life expectancy relative to their higher-income, White,
and urban counterparts.
Responses to health disparities in a healthcare setting and implementation of changes
Health disparities can be addressed by implementing targeted programs and initiatives. For
instance, health educational workshops can be introduced to employees from diverse
backgrounds, addressing specific health concerns in those communities and enhancing
accessibility to healthcare resources by partnering with local community clinics and providing
on-site health screenings. Flaubert et al. (2021) reported ample evidence indicating that access to
primary care prevents illness and death and is linked with positive health outcomes. Another
aspect of addressing health disparity is incorporating cultural competence training for healthcare
providers to understand better and address the unique needs of different populations. This will
ensure that services are more inclusive and tailored to the diverse backgrounds of the workforce.
