Using data to make decisions as a school leader can be helpful when you are assigned to a new school or
position. Reviewing the curriculum when placed into a new school is a great way to find the current
temperature of the school and to find specific areas where the teachers or students need more support.
In viewing the video, the cause of the difference in student achievement scores seems to be the use of
mandated curriculum resources. Teachers who were not using the curriculum resources were showing
greater growth in student achievement as compared to teachers using the curriculum resources. I
believe the teachers not using the curriculum materials and resources know that those resources and
materials are not serving their students needs in meeting the standards, and/or are not aligned properly
to the standards (American College of Education, 2023). If the teachers are evaluating their data and
have noticed trends that do no support using the provided curriculum materials, bringing in new or
different materials that align with standards and provide better opportunities for growth in those
standards can improve overall growth in the students.
Other variables that may be impacting the difference in the student’s scores can be classroom
management of the different teachers, the teacher’s level of knowledge toward the particular standards
in the unit, the level of support from team teachers, administration, and parents/guardians, and the
culture of the school and the specific classrooms.
