Teamwork in Healthcare
Collaboration is extremely important in the health care setting. Therefore, teamwork is
needed for effective collaboration. Essentially, the work of one individual will have an effect on
another within a health care organization. Within a health care organization a team is generally
made up of individuals from different disciplines. These disciplines often consist of physicians,
nurses, management, etc. If the individuals from these different disciplines are not able to work
together as a team, the outcome for the patient will not be satisfactory.
(Buchbinder, Shanks, and
Kite
(2021) discusses the importance of task interdependency. A patient’s needs are going to be
multifaceted meaning that they will expand across a health care organizations different functions.
Setting up an interdisciplinary team can ensure that a patient’s needs are met effectively, safely
and in a timely manner. An effective type of team utilized within a health care setting is a cross-
functional team (CFT). CFTs are developed to deal with specific organizational needs and to
implement performance improvement activities to improve patient services. As the demand for
effective patient management increases and health care organizations become more multifaceted,
the importance of teamwork to include clinical and cross-functional teams increases
(Buchbinder, Shanks, and Kite, 2021).
There are many benefits of teamwork in a health care setting. Some primary benefits that
can be seen with effective teamwork include enhanced care coordination, more efficient service
delivery, improved job satisfaction for employees, and improved patient satisfaction. Some
attributes of a successful team include clarity about job roles of each team member, trust, respect,
and value amongst team members, cultural readiness, and clear leaders that aid the management
process. Where there are benefits there are also costs. Some downsides of teamwork include the
need to set aside time for meetings when time could possibly be spent better and interpersonal
costs such as loss of perceived independence, the need to compromise, and risk taking.
Additionally, when you have a team of individuals there is an increased risk of medical errors.
Team care coordination can also be difficult. The formation of a team is important to the ability
of a team to work together. Five formal stages have been developed by Tuckman to aid in team
development. These five stages include forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning
(Buchbinder, Shanks, and Kite, 2021).
According to
Buchbinder, Shanks, and Kite
(2021), accountable care organizations are
moving forward with the goal of enhanced teamwork. The reasoning behind this is to solve
problems, both wicked and tame, using the insight from multiple individuals from different
backgrounds and disciplines. Having a well-rounded team will aid in a better decision-making
process if done right.
