Policy Effectiveness A study from 2015 – 2018 : About 1 in 10 (9.8%) pregnant women report current alcohol use. About 1 in 22 (4.5%) pregnant women report binge drinking. Alcohol use is highest among women who are in the first trimester of pregnancy, with about 1 in 5 (19.6%) reporting current alcohol use and 1 in 10 (10.5%) reporting binge drinking (Centers for disease control and Prevention, 2022) Scope of the Problem Consuming alcoholic beverages during pregnancy poses an increased risk to fetal development. “Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders ( FASD) are considered the most common nonhereditary cause of mental retardation (Alcohol Policy Information System, 2022)”. Consuming any amount or type of alcohol during pregnancy is unsafe. Population Impact Describe the population that is targeted by this prevention policy. Pregnant women are targeted by this prevention policy. Previous drug or alcohol addiction poses an increased risk for individuals Economic stability can aid with up-to-date healthcare visits during pregnancy and increase health literacy. Policy Overview Policies have been established for posting mandatory signs about the risks of alcohol consumption during pregnancy at settings such as local bars, restaurants, and alcoholic containers. The policy is aimed to prevent consumption of alcohol during pregnancy. The policy is implemented by posting in settings that pregnant women will be reminded of harm alcohol consumption can create. Public Health Recommendations The CDC recommends refraining from alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Get help if you are suffering from alcoholism.
