Clinical Field Experience B: Classroom Management Birth-Preschool
Preschool class :GMU
How did you develop your classroom management plan?
Our school has a list of preset rules
and routines, so I start the year off with those and as I learn the students and identify the needs
in my room, I adjust my methods
Were you able to choose your own classroom management plan/model and behavior
management system?
Yes and No, like I said we have rules set in place like additions(they are
points that the student earn for good behavior)
How do you collaborate with your peers, students, and families in creating your classroom
management plan?
The first few weeks of school we have a morning meeting that entails
socioemotional learning. During this time we will have real world connections to navigate
positive behaviors in the classroom. I discuss with my coteacher what is happening in the class
and how we should go about dealing with it. Once, we come up with a plan we try it out.
How are rules and routines communicated to students and families?
We have song for every
transition that describes the routine within, we also have a program called Deanslist and prep
notes that allows us to communicate with families.
How are rules and routines reinforced throughout the school year?
We have a timeout space,
Freshstart tent, and a small deal square that help with keeping unwarranted behaviors at bay, if
that doesn’t help we call support (this notifies all admin that there is a extreme behavior that
cannot be manage independently in the classroom
What accommodations do you make in your plan for children with exceptionalities?
In this
class there are several students with exceptionalities of different levels, so we use trackers,
timers, alarms, hand signals, etc. to support all our students.
How have you changed your plan over time?
We have changed our plan day to day
sometimes, right now we are maintaining behavioral investments through show and tell,
because of the weather we cannot go outside, so we have show and tell during recess. The
children are so investing in showing off their toys and playing with them they behave a little
better.
As I observed this class so many ideas came to mind. I love how the teachers greet the
students; I notice that it helped those students that have a hard time coming into school. They
have a morning meeting that is strictly to teach social skills and they do check-ins throughout
the day to see the pulse of the room. I love how invested the school seems to be in the whole
child. The teachers let the whole class weigh in how to manage behavior and support those
with exceptionalities. I have never seen a 3-year-old support another child in managing
behavior and it works. The lead teacher and assistant both are both a mix of strict and loving
with the students. I have spent an hour and 15 minutes every day this week and see first how
the pivot and adjust with the students without frustration to get small win while they are having
major disruptions during instruction. Understanding that sometimes you have to change your
plan at the last moment is an important take away for me.
