Clinical Field Experience A
*Due to the holiday and my regular work schedule, I was unable to visit 2 different grade levels I
did however visit 2 Kindergarten classes.
How did you design your classroom to ensure it is developmentally appropriate and
easily accessible for all students?
In this school there are many different diverse learning needs, kindergarten has 3 classrooms, all
having students with both learning disabilities and personal trauma. Before the school year starts,
we are given a list of SEL strategies ang things we need in our classrooms. Getting to know your
students and their families and developing friendly communication with them keeps a steady
relationship. By having effective communication with families, this allows teachers to learn
about the child's background and what the child may need academically.
What did you feel was important to consider when creating your classroom layout to
create a positive and inclusive learning environment?
There are several areas in our classroom layout that help to create a positive and inclusive
learning environment. We have a time out chair where the students are given a timer to think
about their actions and as their time ends, they discuss or reflect on their action and how they
fell about the consequence. There is fresh start area where students can advocate for time alone
to process any big feeling they may have, also we utilize a new space this year in kindergarten,
called small deal square. Small deal square is a space close to the whole class, where students
step away but not out of the group, to reflect and rejoin the whole group quickly.
How does the physical classroom layout support the inclusion of all students? What
challenges did you encounter when incorporating an inclusive learning
environment?
Having all these spaces available to all students, shows inclusivity because it infers that every
student is equal and is afforded the same supports in school. I do have a hand full of students that
have extreme behaviors and need additional supports from outside of the classroom.
Reflection
Both classrooms have a timeout, fresh start, and a small deal square. Each classroom is set up
differently and utilize these spaces differently, but the hope is to get the same results of a calm,
inclusive classroom environment for students to learn.
I would create an inclusive classroom, by
first learn about the different personalities and needs in my classroom. Everyday with little ones is
different, so starting the day with a SEL lesson helps to build the students ability to navigate their
emotions and open them up to self-advocacy and help with a better learning environment for all
students. In the future, my classroom will have the same layout, since I expect to get a job
teaching here. Helping to create a positive area, and inclusive learning environment through all
the require spaces. We will have a time out area with a chair (and an affirmation mirror) where
the students are given a timer to think about their actions. There will be a fresh start area
(consisting of a tent for students to go inside for privacy) where students can advocate for time
alone to process any big feeling they may have. Small deal square will be in the center of the
whole class, to reflect and rejoin the whole group quickly. I would also implement an incentive
plan through a class store where the students earn money by exhibiting positive behavior and
doing their work.
