Scenario 1
There are many difficulties that could arise when training 500 nursing staff members on
a new patient documentation system while maintaining 24-7 operations. The new system
includes training on computers on carts, barcode scanners, and hand-held devices. The training
period may take a long period of time due to limited equipment. The hospital will need to make
sure there are enough computers, scanners, and hand-held devices available for the day-to-day
operations, which will limit how many devices are available for training. The number of devices
available for training will play a factor in how many nurses can get trained at a time, as well.
Staffing could also be a challenge during the training period. There needs to be enough
nurses scheduled to maintain normal operations, while also making sure to schedule nurses to
get trained on the new equipment. Scheduling issues may also arise in specific units. Certain
units require special certifications and training that not all nurses have. The hospital will need to
make sure they have enough nurses to properly staff all units with nurses with the correct
certifications. It is important that the hospital keeps detailed records of what nurses have been
trained on each device. Any error in training records will delay the training process and affect
the 24-7 operations of the hospital.
Although challenges may arise during the training period, if the hospital is diligent and
detail-oriented, operations will return to normal shortly.
