Case Study 3
As a leader in the development team, changing a hospital from a paper file to a
computer information system will take some adjusting for the healthcare staff. Kotter’s
management strategies will allow for a smooth transition to the computer information system.
The first step is to create a sense of urgency. The purpose of this step is to inspire people to act,
in this case, to adopt the new computer system in order to best care for patients. The second
step is to build a guiding coalition. The hospital will need to gather a strong coalition of
healthcare staff members to guide the rest of the staff along this transition. The third step is to
form a strategic vision. As the leader of this transition I will create a vision for staff members of
the past and how we are going to make our future goals a reality. The fourth step is to enlist a
volunteer army. Kotter’s volunteer army is important to ensure a large-scale change operates
smoothly. The hospital will need to gather enough staff members who are passionate about the
change to help implement the system switch. The fifth step is to enable action by removing
barriers. In order to accomplish the goal of switching to a computer information system the staff
will need to resolve any problems that arise. For example, there could be technology problems
during the system change. The sixth step would be to generate short-term wins. During a long
process it’s important to celebrate short-term wins to track progress and keep the healthcare
staff motivated. The seventh step is to sustain acceleration. The computer information system
change will take a long time, it’s important to press harder after the first successes. The eighth
step is to institute change. Throughout the process of switching to the computer information
system evaluate systems to make sure the healthcare staff adapts to the new system and uses
it in their daily routine.
