Your hospital is selecting a healthcare information system. You are on a team that
analyzes the needs of five departments (radiology, pathology / medical labs, OR, ED,
and pharmacy). Using your experience and judgment along with online research,
develop a list of functions each department would need and/or want in the information
system and create a weighted table like the one in table 4-1 for your functions.

Billing-
Medical billing is used to submit claims to insurance companies to collect
payment for medical services. Once a healthcare service is translated into a billing
claim, the biller follows the claim to make sure the organization gets reimbursement for
the work the provider performed.
Discharge-
A patient is discharged from the hospital once the patient no longer needs
inpatient care. Patients may also be discharged to go to a different facility for
specialized care, or sent home for in-home care.
Patient Information-
Patient information is vital for healthcare workers to provide the
best care for patients. Patient information includes past procedures, family medical
records, allergies, and more.
Reporting-
Reporting is the action a healthcare worker takes when they perform a head
to toe assessment of the patient, administer medications, intake and outtake, along with
many other assessments. The data is then reported and added to the patient's file for
future need.
Medication Administration-
Medication administration is when medication is given to
patients. Many hospitals have medication administration technology to prevent medical
error. Healthcare workers often have to scan the patient's bracelet before administering
the medication and have the patient confirm their name and birth date.
Barcode Scanning-
Barcode scanning is a great tool for healthcare workers to gather
detailed and reliable information quickly. Barcodes can be found on medications,
patients' bracelets, and more.
Risk Management-
Healthcare risk management comprises systems, processes, and
reports, put in place to prevent risks and medical errors.
Payroll-
Employees need to be paid accurately for the time they have spent working.
Payroll makes sure payments are accurate.
Staff Scheduling-
Staff scheduling software is important to ensure all areas in the
hospital are properly staffed with the correct staff. The software keeps track of
employees paid days off, sick days, and more.
