HSE 353 Module Four Journal Guidelines and Rubric Personal Reactions to Medically Assisted Treatment Overview Medication assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of medications in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies for the treatment of substance use disorders. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), a combination of medication and behavioral therapies is effective in the treatment of substance use disorders, and can help some people to sustain recovery. However, MAT remains controversial. Some medications used to treat drug use disorders have a long list of potential side effects and present dangers of their own if not used properly. In addition, they can become a crutch and are open to being abused. This journal assignment is your opportunity to think through these controversies and reflect on your own position concerning MAT. Remember that these journal assignments are private between the student and the instructor. No one else will see your assignments. Prompt Create a journal assignment in which you discuss the following: A. What are your thoughts and feelings about MAT? Explain why you feel as you do. Provide examples as appropriate. B. Are some treatments more acceptable than others, (e.g., Prozac versus methadone)? If so, what makes the difference? C. How might your beliefs on MAT affect your counseling practices? Optionally, you may want to discuss any other issues you believe are relevant to MAT. What to Submit Your journal assignment should be 3 to 5 paragraphs in length. Articulate your insights and ideas in a professional manner.
