What do you see as the most important things that parents can do to help their children at this point in their lives?
Good afternoon Dr. Deris and Classmates,
Part 1
This week we learned about how the brain develops in early stages of life as well as physical development. Some of
the most important things that parent can do to help their children during this point in their life is receiving the
nutritional needs such as breastmilk or infant formal, interactions between the infant and parents as well as offering
praise for positive actions, and appropriate sleep routines. Additionally, parents can support with motor, social, and
emotional development. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2023), “Having a safe and loving
home and spending time with family―playing, singing, reading, and talking―are very important. Proper nutrition,
exercise, and sleep also can make a big difference.”
Part 2
All of the above mentioned about the most important things that parents can do to help their children to develop are
essentially associated to classical, operant, habituation and recovery or imitation in one way or another.
-A model of classical conditioning is the nutritional needs that an infant need. Their nutritional needs is crucial
because it provides support for brain growth. If infants do not receive the appropriate nutritional needs, the brain
unfortunately does not grow properly and will have effects on the infant’s brain such as low weight. According to
The Providence Nutrition Team (2019), “Typically, a baby’s brain grows as much during their first year as it will for
the rest of their life. Poor nutrition during this time may cause long-term harm to the developing brain.”
Furthermore, sleep routine allows the infant to know what to expect and can reduce distress in the infant.
-A model of operant conditioning includes interactions between the infant and parents as well as offering praise for
positive actions. This allows the child to develop self-confidence, build trust, and learn that certain behaviors have
consequences. For example, by crying, infants produce a response from the parent of caring and comforting them, so
they learn that by crying, the parent will care for them.
-A model for habituation and recovery include motor development as the infant prefers toys that they are familiar
with instead of new toys. For older toddlers they start to develop new interest in bigger toys and decrease the
attention for smaller toys as they have gained stimuli in such objects. They begin to socialize with different toddlers
as they grow. This allows their social and motor development to expand in various ways from new learning
experiences and activities. For example, and infant may want to play with their rattle shake toy as they are familiar
with it and older toddlers many find new interests in advanced toys.
-A model for imitation would include the parents talking to their child. For example, developing their emotional
skills by showing and playing with them allows an opportunity to show different emotions through imitations.
Additionally,
children imitate simple actions and expressions of others during interactions and will allow them to
recognize the difference between emotions.
