Benchmark - Mission, Vision, and Values Analysis Candice Hughes Grand Canyon University Jordon Rolof Sept 2, 2023
Strategic direction holds great importance within a healthcare organization, as the directional goal is necessary for various strategies being implemented on each relative level. Strategic direction is described by the mission and vision statement designated by the corporate center. The directional essence and how it is followed are closely analyzed by its external stakeholders in the financial community due to the corporation being the legal entity proficient enough to raise debt and equity capital for use by various components. The direction of the organization is focused on the types of business it wants to maintain in its design. The allocation of resources and that’s that manage products as independent entities that focus on the long-term objectives is known as the SBU level. In other words, if an organization’s composition is that of only an individual business, that will be its only directional statement, no further portfolio strategy explanation needed. The importance of an organization’s mission and vision is that is states the organizations intended purpose of existence. A mission is a succinct statement of what the organization is, what it will aim to accomplish and what it will not. It is a description and a domain of the organization, the areas where it will operate, and how it intends to compete in said areas. A mission statement is a pragmatic explanation of the organization’s activities and operations, expressed in terms of its manufactured products, how they will market, and the intended clientele they will be selling and serving. HCA Healthcare states their Mission and Values as follows: “Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life. In pursuit of our mission, we stand by the following value statements: We recognize and affirm the unique and intrinsic worth of each individual. We treat all we serve with compassion and kindness. We trust our colleagues as valuable members of our healthcare team and pledge to treat one another with loyalty, respect,
and dignity. We act with absolute honesty, integrity and fairness in the way we conduct our business and the way we live our lives”. (HCA Healthcare. n.d.). While HCA’s mission statement does not discuss its products, technology deployments, or market segments, it does describe a basic application to its services, customers, and specifically states is commitment to growth and its responses to its social, community and environmental concerns. It is not an exaggerated list of goals, rather it is a concentrated statement regarding its approach to the treatment of patients and keeping the work environment healthy for its employees. HCA healthcare understands the worth of each person and their differences. They express the importance of proactive kindness and treating individuals with compassion. HCA has entrusted its colleagues as valuable prospects to its team, and recognize that loyalty, respect, and dignity is essential in achieving its mission. In HCA’s values its mentions acting with integrity, honesty, and fairness in the way they conduct their business. This demonstrates the understanding that no matter the outcome, it is important to remain transparent within the organization as well as with patients and their families and loved ones. GCU’s Statement on the Integration of Work and Faith states The Lord Jesus instructed His followers to live as salt and light within society, which implies a call to live out our lives in ways that contribute to the common good. We are convinced that this call extends to the workplace and that our respective vocations represent vital opportunities to glorify God by serving others in ways that promote human flourishing” (Candrea, J., n.d.). HCA’s values are indirectly in alignment with the Christian World in the way that it understands the significance of human life and as Christians we are called to serve the people and respect diversity and culture. As Christians, there is an understanding that there are difference approaches to the same scenario, its important to respect one another and remain loyal the mission of the organization. HCA states that they conduct,

fairness, honestly and integrity both in life and in the way they conduct business. Adhering to these values as both a business and as an individual ensures that each person is working toward the same goal. When all parties are in compliance and making efforts to execute these values, it will directly reflect in patient outcomes, employee turn around rates, commitment to work attendance and over success of the organization. With a direct focus on patient care and the work environment, the resources needed to achieve and maintain HCA’s mission and vision would be the Code of Conduct, and the Ethics and Compliance program. “HCA Healthcare has been named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere thirteen times since 2010”. (HCA Healthcare, n.d.) Their ethics and compliance program implies the actions of the company are a direct reflection of the hospital’s mission, fundamental commitment to its stakeholders and code of conduct. The program includes Code of Conduct, Policies and Procedures, Ethics Hotline, Training and Communications, Monitoring and Auditing, Program Structure, and Clinical Ethics and Pastoral Care. HCA’s Code of Conduct is a set of guidelines and standards for all HCA associates that aid in carrying out the day-to-day activities in an appropriate, ethical, and legal manner. These obligatory standards are applied to patient relationships, providers, third party payers, subcontractors, vendors as well as consultants. The development Code and Conduct is to ensure that HCA’s ethical standards are met and to be in compliance with laws and regulations. Policies and procedures address legal and regulatory areas of compliance risk. An anonymous Ethics Hotline is a live line for anyone to report matters that violate HCA’s Code of Conduct or Policies and Procedures. High-quality ethics and compliance training as well as other communication skills brings awareness to the Code. To be sure that policies and procedures are being followed and are effective, the ethics and compliance department partners with the internal audit department,
monitors and audit areas that are of compliance risk. Necessary committees, executives, and facility ethics and compliance officers are all part of the organizational structure to support all ethics and compliance systems. “HCA maintains a large network of professionally certified and accredited chaplains that share ideas and discuss possible endeavors”. (HCA Healthcare, n.d.). The HCA Healthcare Foundation and HCA Healthcare Corporate Sponsorships allow the sustainability of childhood and youth development programs, community health clinics, scholarships, and operating budgets and non-profit organizations cross country. When accompanying a community HCA serves to invest with partnerships, and integrated networks providing access to specialized resources and knowledge to provide a quality future for patients, providers, colleagues, and community. HCA values strong relationships and teamwork to provide patient centered quality care and a positive healthcare working environment.
