As well as an interference of workflow, healthcare inefficiencies are also the cause of additional
healthcare organizations expenses each year. “
A recent Ponemon Institute survey of
more than 400 healthcare providers found that inadequate communication
alone has an estimated annual economic impact of around $1.75 million per
US hospital and more than $11 billion industry-wide” (
Henry, J. 2015)
. These
issues lead to more complex inefficiencies however, there are various
solutions that can help with financial savings as well as within staff. Lack of
proficient communication methods with inefficient paging devices, poor Wi-
Fi resulting in lack of text messages received in a timely manner or at a are
a few names inefficiencies within healthcare. The allowance of secure text
messaging between healthcare staff could create a more efficient work
environment as well as minimize economic loss by fifty percent. The time
care providers spend filtering through duplicate documentation
requirements is another names inefficiency within healthcare. Eliminating
duplicates documents or implementing the use of electronic documentation
that only allows for one submission would allow providers more time spent
with patients creating a better patient flow turn around. Fully eliminating
paper patient charts as well as consent forms and any other patient
documentation required in place of electronic documents will save time with
patients, as well as keep patient information organized and safe. When
patient volume is high the movement of patients in and out of each
department can cause a disruption of patient flow. Many healthcare
organizations double book patients, as well as schedule through the staff’s
lunch hour, as well as accepting unscheduled walk-in’s. While the intent of
these processes is to create opportunities for patients to be seen In the gaps
where last minutes cancellations or no-shows take place, in the event that
all patients are accounted for, it creates long wait times that may sometimes
result in turning patients away or rushed visits causing a lapse in quality
care or risk for error.
