Lesson 7 Assignment
1.
How is the effectiveness of foster care often inhibited?
-
The effectiveness is inhibited by the parents having a hard time accepting that
their child has been taken from them. Understanding that separation is traumatic
for the children. The parent will think that they are pleasing the social workers
and not accepting that the placement could be permanent and will try to
sabotage it.
2.
What steps must be taken before foster care is considered?
-
The social worker examines the means to protect the child, agencies exploring
the support systems, why the placement is needed, the family’s potential, and
why the birth parents requested placement.
3.
What are the advantages of foster care? What are some of the disadvantages?
-
Some advantages are that foster care allows kids to distance themselves from
their fears and the bad environment. Foster care can provide appropriate
treatment for children.
-
Some disadvantages are that kids have to adjust to different families and
environments. Kids aren’t with their parents anymore even though they could be
the ones doing the abuse.
4.
What should be considered in permanency planning?
-
Understanding all the child’s needs, history, and relationships.
5.
How should parents be viewed?
-
As the people providing proper care for the child, understanding the child, and
giving the child support and guidance.
6.
What are the considerations for dealing with the natural parents of children in
placement?
-
Some considerations are the kid cutting off the relationship with their parents,
the child could create unrealistic views about their parents, and the child could
feel abandoned.
7.
What is the role of the foster parent?
-
The foster parent will serve as the parent and a role model. They will create an
easy transition for the child, they will support the kid and their parents if needed.
The foster parent will help the child with any coping or emotional challenges.
8.
Cite other types of placements for children besides foster care. What are the
implications of each of these?
-
There is a residential treatment, and this can allow the kid to return home, a
form of rehabilitation for the child, there is counseling, remedial services, and
therapy.
-
There is also adoptive placement and this is when the foster family adopts the
child. This helps the child prepare for adoption, makes sure the soon-to-be
adoptive parents receive screenings, and is educated on anything pertaining to
the child.
