EDU-315: Family and Community in a Supportive Learning Environment
Mrs. Alisson Armentano
July 16, 2023
Dear Bro. Randy Wainright,
I would like to start out by saying that I hope not only are you and your family well,
but your church family is as well. I know that you are new to being the Pastor at Waynesville
Missionary Baptist and have had some time to adjust into taking over the church. I am
currently a paraprofessional over at Atkinson Elementary School and I would like to propose
a partnership between our school and the Food Pantry that the church oversees.
As you may know already by living here, Brantley County is listed as a low-income

county where 18.8% of our population lives below the poverty line. This is 6% higher than
the national average (Data USA, n.d.).
Unfortunately, we see many students that attend
Atkinson Elementary and other schools within our community that do not have enough food
or have no idea when their next meal will be when not attending school. Hungry children are
a global issue, however, there isn’t much we can do over in another country or state. The
families also are not able to afford all the school supplies needed. What we can do is help
lessen this issue right here within our small community.
When a child’s basic needs are met, such as their physical, mental, and health needs, we
can help them be successful with their academics. There is no doubt that when a child’s needs
are met, they thrive better and are more engaged in the classroom, as well as being more
active. This leads to an increase in academic achievement, which can lead to helping break
the cycle of poverty that is within our community. A partnership between Atkinson
Elementary and Waynesville Baptist Food Pantry can do extraordinary things.
We would like for you to consider creating a partnership with us at Atkinson Elementary
and work together to meet the students in our community’s needs in two areas of need: food
options and free school supplies. Our county is fortunate already to receive free breakfast and
lunch for all students, however, some students go home for the weekend waiting to come
back to school to eat. Eligible students for food and snacks along with school supplies will be
identified through a confidential parent survey that will be given at Open House. In return to
donating food bags for the weekend and school supplies, Atkinson will bring awareness to
your organization with the help of our Parent Teacher Organization, or PTO, by doing food
drives, asking families for donations if possible, and helping with any family events
throughout the school year. Here is a list of some proposed activities:
Back to School Bash
A Back to School Bash could be hosted in our gym and out back at our track. There
would be several booths set up where families can get the school supplies needed for their
child’s grade, such as a bookbag and pencils, as well as a few clothing items to get the year
started. We will send out flyers and post the event on social media for those that are in need
are aware, if Waynesville Missionary Baptist would provide the items needed.
Thanksgiving Food Drive
Holidays are already tough enough for families in poverty without having to worry about
needing to feed their child while out of school for an entire week much less creating a big
meal for one day, Thanksgiving. If you could spare some boxes, we would like to host a food
drive where families bring in items from a donation list provided that has non-perishable
items such as canned foods and boxed items along with drinks and snacks. All items will then
be brought to your Food Pantry and families in need would know that they could go to
Waynesville Missionary Baptist Food Pantry to collect a Thanksgiving week box.
Bingo “Family” Night
At Atkinson Elementary, we are all about bringing the community together for some fun.
We love to do Bingo Nights, and offer for $5 each a simple dinner, usually hotdog or
sandwich with chips, a drink, and 10 Bingo cards. Additional cards are available for purchase
throughout the night as well. We also provide a concession stand with other candies and extra
chips, drinks, and hotdogs available. All funds received go towards renting the inflatables for
our students end-of-the-year bash that they look forward to every year. Our PTO usually
provides the food and prizes that the families can win from Bingo, however, if Waynesville
Missionary Baptist could provide the food, PTO will be able to get more prizes which in turn
means more families could win Bingo.

belonging, Esteem, and then finally Self-actualization. A student’s physiological needs must
be met first for their academic needs to be met and reach their full potential (Mcleod, 2023). I
believe that this partnership between your Church Food Pantry and our school is a great way
to give back to our community, bring awareness to helping others, and help students reach
their full potential.
