I. Research Focus:
A. How does student attendance impact academic achievement, and to what extent does
parental involvement influence this relationship?
B. This focus is important to my teaching/professional expertise because it impacts our
school daily. Our school report reflected a C this year mainly because of our SSQS score
regarding attendance. Only 30% of our students missed five days or less.
II. Introduction:
Student attendance has a direct correlation with academic performance. Understanding this
relationship helps educators and policymakers develop strategies to improve student outcomes.
Regular attendance is often considered an early warning sign for potential academic struggles,
disengagement, or behavioral issues. Researching attendance patterns can aid in early
intervention efforts to support at-risk students. Attendance is also closely tied to parental
involvement in a child's education. Conducting this research is going to help gain understanding
of how parental engagement contributes to or hinders consistent school attendance.
A. The research on student attendance and its impact on academic achievement is crucial
for understanding how to improve attendance and encourage parental involvement.
B. Student attendance impacts academic achievement and parental involvement has a
direct corelation to this relationship.
C. Magness Creek elementary school is located in Cabot, AR. There is a mixture of rural
and city areas and includes many different socioeconomic statuses. There are currently
342 students enrolled, PreK through 4th grade. There are 42 staff members, and I am
currently the Instructional Facilitator. Our SQSS category score was our biggest drop on
our School Report Card for the 2022-2023 school year. The area most significantly
impacting that drop was student attendance. After analyzing last years data, only 30% of
our students missed five days or less. I have also attached a chart displaying which grade
levels were impacted the most. Attendance effects the overall achievement of the student
as well. If they are not at school, they can’t learn. Even though we met our growth goal
for ESSA, our achievement score dropped significantly to a 67.
D. The results of this research will be applied to help increase understanding of the
impact of student acieievemnt and to increase parental involvement in helping with
school attendance.
III. Statement of Purpose
The purpose of my action research is to gain an understanding of how s
tudent attendance has a
direct correlation with academic performance. Understanding this relationship helps educators
and policymakers develop strategies to improve student outcomes. Regular attendance is often
considered an early warning sign for potential academic struggles, disengagement, or behavioral
issues. Researching attendance patterns can aid in early intervention efforts to support at-risk
students. Attendance is also closely tied to parental involvement in a child's education.
Conducting this research is going to help gain understanding of how parental engagement
contributes to or hinders consistent school attendance.
IV. Possible Research Methods: Collecting Data
A. Instruments:
●
Student surveys
●
Parent surveys
●
Essential Standard assessments
●
NWEA MAP and ATLAS proficiency scores
●
Individual student attendance data
●
Previous years SSQS data
●
Focus groups (students, parents, and teachers)
●
Interviews
B. What data (at least 2 kinds) would you gather and how would you
gather it? What data collection techniques will you use to answer
each of your research questions?
1.
Qualitative:
a.
Parent surveys will be sent out to gather feedback and understanding of
the importance of student attendance.
b.
Focus groups will be conducted with teachers, parents, and students to
gather information on what incentives could possible work to increase
student attendance.
2.
Quantitative:
a.
Previous attendance data and how it directly correlated to our SSQS score.
b.
Attendance percentages for a focus group of students and compare with
their essential standard assessment scores and MAP/ATLAS scores.
V. Possible Research Methods: Analyzing Data
1.
Parent survey results and focus grou documentation will be analyzed thorough an
electronic survey and anecdotal notes.
2.
Quantitative data from attendance percentages and assessment scores will be
analyzed through a table outlining the students, assessment scores, and attendance
percentages.

VI. Preliminary Conclusions
After conducting my research, I hope to gain more information on how to encourage
parents to help increase their child’s attendance and a better understanding on why some families
don’t see the importance. After visiting with families and students, I will be able to create
incentive programs and informational meetings to help increase student attendance school-wide.
I also hope to gain a better understanding of the direct correlation between student attendance
and student achievement. With this information, we can share with parents so they can see first
hand the importance of consistent attendance of their children academic achievement.
