Week 2 Discussion
The NONPF core competencies that all students should have upon graduation are:
1.
Scientific Foundation Competencies
2.
Leadership Competencies
3.
Quality Competencies
4.
Practice Inquiry Competencies
5.
Technology and Information Literacy Competencies
6.
Policy Competencies
7.
Health Delivery System Competencies
8.
Ethics Competencies
9.
Independent Practice Competencies
Each of the core competencies hold equal significance and are accompanied by specific
goals that NP students must demonstrate in order to successfully graduate from NP school.
These competencies play an extremely important role in ensuring that new graduate NPs
have the essential knowledge, skills, and capabilities needed to complete their
responsibilities as licensed independent practitioners. The scientific core competencies
encompass a broad range of areas, such as familiarity with clinical practice guidelines,
evidence-based practices, translational research, and the care of diverse and vulnerable
patient populations. Meeting all these core competencies is imperative for NP students
before graduation. It establishes the foundation for practicing NPs so they can be held
accountable for their role and professional development.
Three examples of how I can demonstrate the NONPF core competencies before graduation
are:
1.
Clinical Practice
: I can demonstrate this core competency by actively participating in
clinical rotations and applying my clinical knowledge and skills in real-world patient care
scenarios. During my clinical experiences, I can work with a preceptor to assess,
diagnose, and develop treatment plans for patients. This hands-on experience will help
me gain competence in clinical practice before graduation.
2.
Leadership
: To showcase leadership skills, I can engage in extracurricular activities such
as student nurse practitioner organizations or volunteer work related to healthcare.
These experiences will allow me to take on leadership roles, organize events, and
collaborate with peers, demonstrating my ability to lead and work effectively in
interprofessional teams.
3.
Health Policy and Advocacy
: I can exhibit competency in health policy and advocacy by
participating in healthcare advocacy initiatives or joining organizations focused on
healthcare policy reform. By attending legislative meetings, advocating for patient-
centered policies, and staying informed about current healthcare legislation, I can
contribute to shaping healthcare policies and demonstrate my commitment to this core
competency.
