1. Did you survive the month?
What choices did you have to make to survive?
While playing the game SPENT it was very realistic and exciting to start with $1000 and
see how we can survive a month with just that. For the game, I chose to do admin work for an
office temp. This job paid $15 an hour and the hours did vary. When going through the game I
chose the bronze plan for the insurance which was the cheapest one, then I chose to have a yard
sale when I didn’t have enough room for all of my stuff and I got $150 from the yard sale. I also
chose to help tutor my kid in math to save money on a tutor. When it came time to buy the
groceries I paid for 2 cans of beans, 2 4-packs of ramen noodles. 2 cartons of eggs, 1 gallon of
milk, 1 toilet paper, 1 paper towel, and 1 peanut butter costing a total of $22. When experiencing
chest pains I chose to spend $80 because there is a family history of heart problems. By the end
of the game, I was left with $1,142 and survived the month.
2. Project Access addresses the different social determinants of health. Give specific examples
from your clinical experience.
Project access addresses safe housing, help with food, and education for the kids. At the
project access that I am at is like a little village that helps people out who are low-income. They
offer a preschool for kids on the site and it is free they also have an after-school program for k-12
from 3-5 p.m. and the kids love it. While they are at the after-school program they are given
food. They help with economic stability by providing this housing for families.
3. A public health nurse would partner with Project Access sites to address social determinants of
health for vulnerable populations. Give specific examples of what interventions a public health
nurse could implement at Project Access sites (i.e., mobile medical services, health promotion
classes, health screening events, health insurance enrollment fairs, etc.). Rather than just listing
interventions, you must discuss details on how you as a PHN would plan and implement these
programs.
A public health nurse could implement mobile medical services for the community of
project access because since they are low-income they sometimes don’t go to the doctor or
urgent care because they don’t have money to spend but if they were provided with mobile
medical services it would help them out a lot and get routine check-ups. Health screening events
would also be very beneficial because they may not get screened routinely so this can help keep
them on track. I would plan the health screening by showing pictures and interacting with them
about their health and why screenings are important as well as primary, secondary, and tertiary
prevention is a big thing.
