ASSESSMENT IN CORRECTIONS PRESENTATION JUSTIN GUERRERO
SUMMARY OF CRYSTALS CASE Crystal: Crystal is a 48-year-old female from a large city. She resides in a resource-constrained area with marked levels of continuous gang violence and inadequate social services, such as insufficient policing. At the time of treatment, Crystal is married with two school-going children and is informally employed. Crystal was referred for treatment after witnessing a gang-related killing of a 23-year-old male in front of her house. Crystal reported to have known the young man who was shot, as he lived in the same neighborhood as Crystal. Since the event, Crystal reported feelings of fear and did not want to leave her house. She reported feelings of anger and shame for not having the courage to prevent the shooting. She avoided talking about the event and could not walk past or look at the location of the killing, which was near her front gate. She reported to have poor concentration and sleep, which resulted in her using medication to fall asleep at night. In addition, Crystal described that she struggled to understand why people could be so cruel to each other. In addition, Crystal reported distress related to her marriage. On assessment, Crystal reported only verbal and emotional abuse, but it later became apparent that she had also experienced physical abuse in her marriage. Crystal is going through an intake after being arrested for drug possession.

ASPECTS OF EACH ASSESSMENT INSTRUMENT THAT WOULD BE USEFUL IN ASSESSING THIS CLIENT. When it comes to the Davidson trauma scale which is for PTSD this type of assessment is a self trauma assessment I think this will be very beneficial to crystal considering the situations she might not want to talk about it yet so being able to try a self assessment might be easier on her mental health. The Beck Depression Inventory is a great tool because they are able to answer the assessments questions in a multiple choice way which is a lot easier for most people.
THE MOST APPROPRIATE INSTRUMENT TO BE USED IN THIS CASE Risk assessments: using a risk assessment would benefit the treatment process that will be put in place for crystal we will be able to see which environments she will excel in and which areas she could have a possible mental relapse Motivation is a another very important key tool she may have mental relapses and being that person or provider we need to be able to assure her that her mental health will get better in time.

ANY CHALLENGES THAT YOU MAY FACE WHEN ASSESSING THIS CLIENT Like with many clients that are having mental health issues there are those that will be reluctant to treatment and its very important to keep in mind that each individual is different. When it comes to crystal the hardest thing we will have to deal with is her PTSD trauma with the shooting and the depression that comes with that.
