Five-Year Professional Development Plan
A1. Short-Term, Intermediate, and Long-Term Goals
My one-year short terms goals include completing my BSN through WGU by January 2024
and starting the MSN program at WGU.
I currently have clinical hours to complete and 2
more classes as well as the BSN capstone project to complete my BSN. I plan to start the
MSN program as soon as possible after completing my BSN.
My intermediate 5-year plan
consists of completing the MSN program and advancing in my role at the hospital I currently
work at.
My boss, the current director of the Med/Surg unit, plans to retire in the next 3-5
years.
She was the one who encouraged me to go back to school to get my BSN so I could
one day take her place as director.
My 5-year long term goal is to grow comfortable and
confident in my role as Med/Surg director.
I am going to get my MSN because at some point
in my career I would like to teach the next generation of nurses.
A2. Current Certificates or Certifications Requirements
Currently, I am certified in BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support),
and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support).
All these certifications require renewal every 2
years.
Our hospital does an online classroom portion and skills check off on a VAM (Voice
Assisted Mannequin) I also recently acquired my Med/Surg certification through ANCC and
passed on the first try.
My hospital offers a program called success pays where they will pay
for your first 2 attempts at a certification to further your knowledge, so I did not have to pay
for this certification at all.
This certification is good for 5 years and allowed me to
participate in a program at work called the clinical ladder, where I keep track of all the extra
work I do am it makes me eligible for extra money on every paycheck.
A3. Future Certificates or Certifications Requirements
I will continue to renew my current certifications as they come up for renewal.
My BLS,
ACLS, and PALS are good until 2024 and my Med/Surg certification is good until 2028.
When I finish the MSN program, I will also investigate getting the Nurse Executive
certification from ANCC as well.
Although I primarily work in Med/Surg, I am also considering
getting the TNCC certification.
It is the trauma nurse care course.
It is usually obtained by
those that work in the ED, but as a leader and the infection preventionist at the hospital, I
think it would be a good idea to take the course so I can be helpful if needed during a
trauma.
We are a small hospital, but we are the only one within a 45-mile radius so
sometimes we get very critical patients that need stabilization before being transferred to a
higher level of care.
A4. Education Requirements
I don’t plan on going any further than my MSN at this time so once I finish the BSN program,
which included finishing this assignment and my clinical hours, then I will go on to the MSN
program as soon as possible. I want to stay in the schoolwork motivated frame of mind.
A5. Work Experience Requirements

The Med/Surg director position requires a BSN to be eligible for the role.
You do not have to
have completed your BSN to accept the position, but you do have to either be enrolled in a
program or have a plan to get your BSN within a certain time period.
I do plan to teach at
some point in my career and having a MSN is required for almost all teaching positions.
I
decided to get my MSN now while I’m doing the BSN program, so I don’t have to go back to
school later.
A6. How Your Professional Development Plan Will Allow You to Be a Change Agent
Being a change agent will allow me to use the knowledge and skills obtained through these
courses and certifications to make a difference where I work.
The skills I have gained will
allow me to be more confident and comfortable speaking out when needed to make the
change needed.
Most people are resistant to change and require a little push to get things
done.
Certificates and Certifications
AMNH, ELNEC, and Additional Certificate
The AMNH class and certification was extremely interesting.
I knew some of the basics of
genetic research and engineering, but it has been a long time, so it was good to have a
refresher on some things.
I had always been interested in the cloning process, so it was fun
to read about that.
Learning things about hereditary diseases is helpful for nurses because
they are hard topics to discuss with patients and family members and the more knowledge
you have the easier the conversation will be.
I worked in a nursing home prior to the
hospital setting so the end-of-life process was one I dealt with quite a bit early in my nursing
career.
It was one of the hardest things, but it gave me such a respect for the hospice and
palliative care nurses.
It was always so sad to lose a patient, but I felt honored and
privileged to be able to be a part of their last days.
It made my a better person and a better
nurse.
The additional course I took was the
Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Nursing
Education (SOGI Nursing) I thought it would be beneficial for me since I work in such a small
town and community, we don’t deal with the LGBTQ+ population very often.
I would hate to
offend someone I am supposed to be taking care of because I just don’t know what is
appropriate when addressing that population.
I learned so much from the courses.
There
were things I thought were right that turned out to be offensive to patients.
I would never
intentionally hurt someone’s feelings, so I took that course to learn how to be more sensitive
and aware.
B1. How the Certificates Will Be Used Within Professional Practice
I will use the AMNH certification and knowledge learned to better understand genetics
testing and be better prepared to answer questions from my patients and their families. For
example, we have a high population of sickle cell patients in our area and I can use the
information learned about genetics to help patients’ understanding on how this disease is
passed on. Although I work on the Med/Surg unit, we have our share of patients who pass
away.
During COVID this happened more than I care to remember.
I can use the knowledge
gained from the ELNEC class to help patients and their family members through the dying
process in a way that is respectful and dignified for the patient.
The
Sexual Orientation and
Gender Identity Nursing Education class will offer ways to interact with patients in the
LGBTQ+ community in a way that preserves their privacy and dignity.

These certifications will help support my professional development plan by providing me
with the tools needed to support my patients and provide them with the education to handle
their disease processes.
The AMNH certificate will help me teach my patients about genetics
and how diseases can be hereditary or passed on from parents to children.
The ELNEC
certificate will help me better understand the dying process to recognize when a patient
should be on hospice or palliative care.

Why the Additional Certificate Was Chosen
I chose the
Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Nursing Education certificate because it
was the topic I was the least knowledgeable and comfortable with.
IT was the class I
thought I could benefit the most from.
I did in fact learn quite a lot about the ways to treat
and talk to the LGBTQ+ population in a way the allowed them to get the help they needed
while still being treated with dignity and respect.
