Kin 372, teaching scenarios Please choose one of the following prompts to complete your application. You can choose the one that is closest to your future profession. Please read through the prompt and complete the questions. Prompt 1: 75 year old male, post stroke As a therapist, you need to work with this patient as they relearn how to 1- Walk normally again 2- Reach and grasp (specifically work on grip strength) 3- Stand up from a seated position Prompt 2: 8 year old female As a physical education teacher, you need to work with this student as they learn how to perform the following soccer skills 1- dribble 2- shooting 3- passing Prompt 3: 22 year old male, no experience in swimming As a swimming coach, you need to work with this client as they learn how to 1- tread water 2- do the backstroke 3- do the breaststroke Prompt 4: 25 year old female, recreational basketball player As a personal trainer, you need to work with this client as they want to do strength training on their lower extremities with the following exercises: 1- squats 2- deadlifts 3- lunges
Please answer the following questions based on the prompt that you chose for your application. Which prompt did you choose? (highlighted above) 1- For each of the three skills please provide an example of effective instruction (verbal cues, imagery, spatial anchors, etc.). Please be specific. 1. Walking normally again a. Verbal cue: “roll heel to toe” b. Imagery: Picture one foot in front of the other. See how you used to walk in your head. c. Spatial anchors: If facing twoards a wall, have feet perpendicular to the way the wall runs. 2. Reach and grasp (specifically work on grip strength) a. Verbal cue: “encircle the glass with your hand.” b. Imagery: Squeeze the cup like a stress ball to grasp effectively c. Spatial anchor: have thumb pointed towards the ceiling. 3. Stand up from a seated position. a. Verbal cue: “push with heels” b. Imagery: imagine you’re trying to push your feet into the ground. c. Spatial anchor: keep feet parallel to each other and toes pointed forward. 2- How often should you provide feedback to this learner? Please support your reasoning. I think after given the instruction above, I will wait until the instruction becomes ineffective. If the patient for example is not understanding my instruction after an attempt, I will elaborate more so in order for the patient to understand the concepts. I will also provide positive feedback in order to encourage the patient after their attempts. If they don’t follow the instruction very effectively, I will also elaborate. 3- For each task, please provide an example of setting up constant and variable practice. 1. Walking normally again a. Constant: walk in a straight line for 10 feet b. Variable: Walk to different angles in the room as set up by cones. 2. Reach and grasp (specifically work on grip strength) a. Constant: grab same cup and bring to mouth when it sits six inches in front of you. b. Variable: Grasp different size cups/objects that sit six inches in front of you in a line.
3. Stand up from a seated position. a. Constant: From the same chair, work on standing from the seated position b. From different types of chairs (height and/or surface differences), practice standing from a seated position. 4- Please provide an example of blocked and random practice setup. Because we are learning 3 skills for this stroke patient, I would have the patient follow more of a constant practice setup. To make them blocked, I would have the patient practice their seat to stand practice for 10 minutes and then rest in order to move on to another skill. The process of practicing for 10 minutes will remain for the other tasks as well. If I was to approach the patient in a random practice setup, I would have them do a sequence of all three skills. I would have them sit to stand, walk 10 feet, turn around, and then sit back down to reach and grasp a cup of water. 5- What will you do to help your learner get into the optimal zone of performance? (think about Kahneman’s theory of attention and the inverted U hypothesis) Because the patient is learning these skills, I will try to have them at a lower level of arousal in order for the patient to succeed. This would involve a room absent of other individuals so that the patient is not pressured by lurking eyes and that they have a clear path, especially during the walking task. If they are devoid of other people in the room, their attention span will be focused on the tasks and the instruction provided by me. Think questions- no need to type in your answers for the following questions. Think about them and be ready to talk with your team about them. 1- For each task, provide an example of descriptive, prescriptive, KR and KP augmented feedback. Please specify which one is more informative for your learner. 2- Between constant and variable practice, which one is more effective for your learner? Please provide support for your answer.
