Homework for Chapter 1 Part One: Complete the questions about cooperative learning. Please make sure all answers are in complete sentences and a full paragraph or more. Review your responses to this chapter’s exercises. Were you honest? Did you invest energy in responding? If not, why not? What might this suggest about your investing in becoming and effective, ethical helper? I was honest in answering my responses to the chapter exercises because I understand this is the only way I will be able to obtain applicable information that will benefit me in the long run. The chapter was an easy and information read that allowed me to see myself in each case scenario. By investing quality time in gaining the information and knowledge the chapter provided about being an ethical helper allowed me to access my areas of strength and my areas of weakness, which will be revealed in the answer to another question. What this might suggest about me in becoming an effective ethical helper is that I am concerned about the correct and honest way of delivering social service to future clients and willing to always take a self-assessment first to make sure I am functioning within the appropriate boundaries. What did you learn about yourself as a helper? What specific elements of helping as presented within this chapter excite you or concern you? What I leaner about myself as a helper is that I am genuinely a helper by nature. I am excited about the opportunity to learn advanced skills and knowledge that will allow me to be affective in my natural ability, yet concerned about my ability to function with enough subjectivity to keep the clients need and wants as the focus and my own at bay. Helping is not automatic, yet because it is in my nature to function in the role of helper in most of my social encounters and relationship, I am concerned to not be controlling of the situation in a way that places me in an unethical situation Which particular characteristics of the effective ethical helper do you feel you possess most strongly, and which do you feel you need to focus on developing? My strong interpersonal skills of active listening, patience and leadership have allowed me to develop the helping characteristics intuition and subjectivity needed to function as the helper. I am able to provide competent service but need to be more self- aware. I need to focus on boundary setting and compassion fatigue as to not do more than I should for a client and to make sure that I don’t overextend myself while providing help.
How might you approach the reading, the exercises, and the reflections in the next chapter to maximize your development as a more self-aware, ethical helper? I will approach the next chapter reading and reflections by first starting early to allow time, (more than a day) for true reflection and process of the information provided. I will also go back and review the questions and my responses to better understand the information along with increasing my note taking to Part Two: Search recent news articles and find one that you feel has to do with ethics as it relates to working in the helping profession (social work, psychology, sociology, child development, etc.). Answer the following questions: List the article found https://www.military.com/daily-news/2020/08/22/family-seeks- damages-after-veterans-suicide-inside-va-mental-health-unit.html Summarize the article (one paragraph) The above selected article is in reference to a veteran who committed suicide while in a Department of Veterans Affairs mental health unit. The veteran was rated 50% for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder and was having a difficult time transitioning to civilian life after serving two tours of duty in Iraq. Two previous suicide attempts and continued battles of depression resulted in the veteran’s hospital confinement and being red-flagged as a high risk for suicide. However, several factors such as staffing issue, unsafe nursing rounds and practice, inadequate training, and inoperable cameras, just to name a few, are listed as contributing elements to what the veteran’s family is claiming as complete disregard for patient safety which lead to his death. They have filed a wrongful death under the Federal Tort Claims Act claiming the VA failed to provide overall safety which lead to the veteran’s suicide. Describe why you feel that it as to do with ethics (one paragraph) I selected this article and feel it has to do with ethics because it deals with the social population of veterans and deals with mental health and medical care. The health and educational provided to individuals and groups with a Department of Veterans Affairs fall under the category of helping profession meaning all employees are held to an ethical standard to provide quality care and service. Yet, the stated issue of neglect and improper safety suggest an inability of the medical facility and staff to provide competent service. The collaborative process of helping relationship between the facility and the veteran was breached if they failed to perform their duties and focus on the veteran’s needs, concerns and goals. Their duty was to access the veteran’s needs, connect him with adequate resource and provide knowledge and information to help in his transition to civilian life. Part Three: Define the Important Terms from the Chapter
Boundaries – clear and established roles of function for the helper and client Burnout – you are tired and have no desire to do the job anymore Compassion fatigue – to much emotional investment that begins to overtake your own life Competence – functioning within your scope of knowledge and skill, not acting like you know when you don’t Defining and maintaining a helping relationship – a collaborative process with the helper in control, providing competent service within boundaries while focusing on the need, concerns and goals the client Emotional objectivity – making sure our emotions don’t interfere in the client’s story, we are to guide them and not become them Promoting the welfare of the client – keeping the focus on the client at all times and making decision and choices that promote their success Right to refuse – client is responsible for their own participation so they have freedom to choose their engagement, the right to self-determination. Unmet needs – the helper placing personal desires and needs above that of the client
