Unit 9 Discussion 1 Since the introduction of new technological advancements, the way that college courses are delivered to students has been changed for the better. Technology allows for multiple opportunities for personalized learning at the student’s pace, reflection upon the assessments with ready feedback from instructors, steady progression over time management, and the usage of self-directed learning to take responsibility for one’s own education (McKeachie & Svinicki, 2013). Whether the college class is online or in-person, the usage of technology is benefiting students by enhancing their experience and providing professors with the opportunity to use various teaching methods for the different learning styles. The application of online meetings, discussion boards, recorded lecture videos, interactive assessments, and other resources provide vast options for the students to use to help in the retention of material. Therefore, the usage of technology allow students to develop self-efficacy skills and manage course work by gaining a multitude of experiences with the different types of technology readily available (West et al., 2007). However, there are advantages and disadvantages of technology at the college level. The advantage of an online course is meeting new learners with discussion posts and having the freedom to complete work whenever necessary before the deadlines. Yet, when a course is solely online, it may prove to be isolating for the students and therefore, the learner may not engage as much with their peers or instructors (Merriam et al., 2006). This really may depend on the individual. Some students like to engage in the discussion boards, but others may find it boring or just another part of busy-work for the classroom. Yet, there are opportunities for social interaction if the student and professor both put forth the effort. References McKeachie, W., & Svinicki, M. (2013). McKeachie's Teaching Tips (14th ed.). Unit 9 Discussion 2 While there are many benefits to the usage of technology for college courses, there can be downsides as well due to many issues. Since the invention of the world wide web, there is a readily available source of information for whoever is searching for answers. It is truly a great invention. However, that does not mean all the of the information that is available is necessarily true or factual. Not all sources that are found online are credible. Therefore, it is imperative that students learn the difference between what is and what is not a credible resource to use for their studies. When students are using articles or research papers, then it is crucial to ensure the paper is from a credible source, peer reviewed, and written within recent years to be the most accurate and precise source on the topic. The overall purpose of technology is to gather and share information, to learn from one another, but only if the knowledge is true (LINCS, n.d.). Hence, the method of searching for sources, research, or articles is a method that most instructors or students use to implement the most recent knowledge in the classroom setting. When professors can provide a source of credible knowledge, it is vital for the student’s learning to have as many references as possible. A competent professor will have many resources readily available for the learner’s usage to expand their knowledge and teach the class on how to find and use a credible source (MKeachie & Svinicki, 2013). There are several different websites for students to use to help them with their studies. The two that I mostly use for my advantage are Grammarly and RefWorks. Grammarly helps check my writing to ensure it is superb and RefWorks stores all my necessary references for my papers. There are other resource I use as well, such as PubMed, the Capella Library, NCBI Database, and others to find credible, peer- reviewed research papers. References (LINCS, n.d.).
