Identify two standards you are confident in implementing in the classroom. NAEYC separated their standards and desires for ethical behaviors into four sections; ethical responsibilities to: children, families, colleagues, and community and society (Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment, 2011). The two standards that I favored most are ethical responsibilities to children and their families. NAEYC states, their responsibility is to provide care and education in classrooms that are safe, healthy, nurturing, and responsive for each child (Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment, 2011). I believe the children’s learning environments are equally important as the content being taught. The other standard I liked was confirming ethical responsibilities to families. The NAEYC acknowledged their responsibility is to bring about communication, cooperation, and collaboration between home and the educational program to further improve the child’s development (Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment, 2011). I try to involve families as much as I can by giving weekly/monthly updates as to what we are learning/ doing in the classroom. I also give tips on how to keep learning going on at home and upcoming events we have in the classroom. What is one standard where you might seek more support? The standard that I think may be most difficult to implement into my classroom is the ethical responsibilities to colleagues. The NAEYC’s primary responsibility to their staff is to establish and maintain settings and relationships that support productive work and meet professional needs (Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment, 2011). I think this may be the most difficult to implement because all children learn different just as every class is different. I think what may work for one teacher one school year may not work for everyone or even for themselves the next school year. I also think it has become harder for teachers to collaborate and support each other’s ideas because the main opportunities that we have to discuss supporting each other, is in passing or outside of work hours and/or locations.
