Unit 1 Discussion 1 The article by Ruch (1993) surveyed studies of the learning capabilities of youths and adults to determine who has more intelligence. The overall conclusion of the article is as an individual who is young can use and develop great learning abilities, but as the person approaches old age, the intelligence declines, as does the performance of the brain. Therefore, the data Ruch collected displays a relationship between age and intelligence. I do agree with Ruch’s findings that as an individual ages there is a potential for decline in intelligence. Yet, I do not believe this is due to how smart the individual is, but simply the decline of the brain’s health. As an individual ages, there is more risk for disease and negative impacts on health which could affect one’s thinking capabilities. I do agree too with Ruch’s assessment about motivation as well, seeing that older individual usually as not as motivated as younger ones (1993). Adults think they have learned all that is necessary, and therefore do not pursue new knowledge. If Ruch’s (1993) article is compared to how adults learn in the college setting, it is important to note that many individuals who are in college are young adults who still have the drive to learn. Yet, there has been an increase in those who have decided to return to school, and therefore the age has gone up in the classroom. Thus, this means professors will have to apply various learning methods to ensure proper learning to all age groups. References Ruch, F. L. (1933). Adult learning. There are various learning styles, and everyone has a preference on which is best to use for their learning. Therefore, it is important to note that not every individual learns the same way (Truluk & Courtney, 1999). Information is processed in different ways by each learning style. The teaching methods the faculty member uses in the college classroom usually reflects upon a particular learning style, whether it be visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or verbal (Hardy, 2017). I do agree that individuals have a preference on learning style due to my experience as a professor for over ten years. I, myself, am a visual and kinesthetic learner due to my deafness, so verbal and auditory are out for me. It is easy to tell which of my students have a preference for visual and kinesthetic since I have the same methods applied, but for those who are auditory and verbal, sometimes, I need an extra hand.
