Report
According to California Penal Code 11164-11174.3, certain professionals have an obligation to report suspected incidents of child abuse or neglect. By encouraging prompt reporting and investigation of child abuse situations, the statute ensures the protection and wellbeing of children. According to the California mandatory Reporter Statute, mandatory reporters in California include teachers and school officials, childcare providers, social workers, medical and healthcare experts, law enforcement officers, and others (California Department of Education, 2023). When confronted with a mandated reporter situation, the following measures should be performed to report suspected child abuse or neglect: 1. Immediately contact the local law enforcement agency or the Child Protective Services (CPS) agency. 2 - Submit a written report on Form SS 8572 within 36 hours of a verbal report ("The Child Abuse Prevention Center", n.d.). Scenario: You work as a school nurse at a nearby elementary school in Fountain Valley, California. A fourth-grade student fell while playing at recess and was sent to the school nurse's office. The school nurse is tending to the student when she notices a number of unexplained bruises on the child's arms and legs in various states of healing. When questioned about the injuries, the student became evasive and reclusive. References: Child abuse identification & reporting guidelines . California Department of Education.
