Example Introductions for the Local Issue Argument Essay Example 1: Uncovering Latino Culture: What Prevents Latinos from Seeking Mental Healthcare and Treatment I am Latina. I am Hispanic. I wear my heritage proudly; it is part of my identity. With it comes a sense of community and belonging, a beautiful culture, so rich and full of life but it also comes with judgement, unrealistic expectations and discrimination even from our own people. Being Latino, or just simply being a person of color in today’s world is a challenge all on its own. Latinos face many struggles in life, they carry their trauma with them because they don’t know how to heal from it, taking care of your mental health to Latinos means that there is something wrong with you. This leads me to the topic of my paper, due to the nature of Latino culture, people brought up in it have these misconstrued ideas of mental health, believing that you are “crazy” or weak if you show any signs of mental illness. Latino culture has an impact on Latinos that makes them shy away from receiving care for their mental health related issues, as wells as other contributing factors to why mental health isn’t at the forefront of many Latinos. Example 2: What are the effects of Marijuana Legalization? In November 2012, Colorado and Washington approved ballot initiatives that legalized marijuana for recreational use under state law. Since then, nine additional states (Alaska, Oregon, California, Nevada, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Illinois) plus the District of Columbia have followed suit, either by ballot initiative or legislative action. Voters in four other states (New Jersey, South Dakota, Arizona, and Montana) approved state ballot measures legalizing marijuana for personal use in the November 2020 election (Dills et al., 2021). What are the effects of the legalization of marijuana on the United States? Does this drug legalization contribute towards the
increased crime rate? Even though detractors argue that legalization harms public health, increases other crime and diminishes safety, the legalization of drugs, specifically looking at marijuana, has a positive effect on the United States and does not directly contribute to an increased crime rate. This is because it would lead to less substance abuse and because of that lead to the reduction of people charged for small crime. It would make our streets safer by taking away the power of major drug organizations. In addition, it would be legal for people to sell which would mean we could tax it which raises tax revenue which in return stimulates the economy and helps the United States. Example 3: What You Should Know About GMO On a Sunday afternoon, you find yourself strolling through the grocery aisle to complete your grocery shopping for the week ahead. “I want cereal,” your daughter exclaims. You stop and reach for a box of cereal and notice the packaging says, “produced with genetic engineering.” Without thinking, you toss the box of cereal into your shopping cart, but what exactly does “produced with genetic engineering” mean? What are the potential risks associated with consuming these foods? How are these foods affecting our environment? Genetically modified foods are becoming more commonly produced and can be found pretty much everywhere. Cereal is not the only product being genetically modified. You will be surprised to find that other foods such as most canned vegetables, fresh fruits, potatoes, milk, and even canola oil have all undergone some sort of genetic modification. Even though foods containing genetically modified organisms are available to purchase at your local grocery store, that does not necessarily mean that these foods are safe for consumption. Consuming foods containing genetically modified organisms have been known to cause allergic reactions and other health
effects. There is not enough scientific research to verify the long-term effects of foods containing genetically modified organisms. Questions to answer: 1) What rhetorical strategies does each author use in their introduction to open their essays and engage with their readers? Example 1: The author uses their own personal experiences. Example 2: The author uses data and background information. Example 3: The author tells a story. 2) Identify the thesis statements in each introduction. Write them here: Example 1 : With it comes a sense of community and belonging, a beautiful culture, so rich and full of life but it also comes with judgement, unrealistic expectations, and discrimination even from our own people. Example 2 : Even though detractors argue that legalization harms public health, increases other crime and diminishes safety, the legalization of drugs, specifically looking at marijuana, has a positive effect on the United States and does not directly contribute to an increased crime rate. Example 3: Consuming foods containing genetically modified organisms have been known to cause allergic reactions and other health effects. There is not enough scientific research to verify the long-term effects of foods containing genetically modified organisms. 3) For each introduction, write who you think the target audience is. Provide reasons for your answer or an example from the text. Example 1: Mental healthcare treatment centers, she talks about the struggles Latinos face when it comes to mental health and how they do not seek out resources.

Example 2: State legislators, giving examples of the advantages and disadvantages about the legalization of marijuana. Example 3: General public, she uses the example of grocery shopping with her family and seeing genetically engineered on the package of a cereal box. 4) Which introduction was most appealing to you? Why? The first one because the author uses her own experiences to draw in her audience. She shares her struggles as a Latino and how her culture makes them more likely to shy away from seeking mental healthcare facilities.
