1. Compare the continuing education requirement with the continuing qualifications requirement. The continuing education requirement has established CE requirements that bridge the gap between entry-level formal education and advanced practice needs, prevent professional obsolescence, assure the public, our primary customers, that all technologists maintain competence, demonstrate accountability to peers, physicians, health care facilities and the public, advance the profession through continuous growth of all technologists working in the field, provide advanced growth opportunities for technologists through advanced preparation, reinforce the professional code of ethics for all practicing professionals. Registered technologists must renew their ARRT registrations annually, but they must also pass mandatory CE requirements and documentation that the credits have been obtained, this is required on a 2 year basis. The newly registered technologists will have to begin obstaining CE credits on the first day of the next birth month after becoming certified. Obtaining the required number of CE credits is necessary to renew registration with the ARRT, it is easy if the factors are remembered. 1. Attending, obtaining, and maintaining documentation of attendance and participation for each CE activity is solely the technologist’s responsibility. 2. Twenty-four credits are required during each 24-month biennium. 3. All 24 CE credits must be identified as category A or category A +. 4. Credits must be educational activities relevant to the radiologic sciences or patient care. 5. The same CE activity may not be used more than once in a biennium, and CE credits for such activities as directed readings, home study courses, or Internet activities may only be used once and never repeated. In comparison to the continuing qualification requirements, they were created by the ARRT as time limited certificates, these are limited to 10 years. The technologists must take a self-assessment to determine their level of knowledge and whether they have kept up with changes and the advances in the field. In order to accomplish the goal, the continuing qualifications requirement was created. Technologists are contacted 3 years before the 10 year anniversary, which gives them 3 years to complete the process. The CQR begins with a self structured assessment, which is used to determine where CE is needed, this assessment can’t be failed. The results of the assessment will be used to determine what areas CE activities will be needed and completed. If prescribed, the CE activities will count toward the biennium CE requirement, and the technologists also has 3 years to complete the prescribed CE. 2. Discuss the importance of belonging to a professional association. It is important to belong to a professional association such as the ASRT because their mission is to “advance and elevate the medical imaging radiation therapy profession and to enhance the quality and safety of patient care.” The professional association also works to present education and educational opportunities to the radiological technologists of the U.S. The ASRT provides continuing education opportunities for its members, and provides a valuable source of education for technologists called the ASRT scientific journal which provides rad-techs with the latest development within the profession and more. The ASRT is committed to continuing education and basic education for all its members, it also awards and grants members with grants and scholarships to help technologists to further their education. The ASRT also helps technologists obtain professional status by helping radiological technologists clarify what a professional rad- tech is and what consists of professional behavior. The professional association represents its members and allows them to contribute to the advancement of the professions. This professional association is a field that continues to grow and bands together to form new associations that the members can be a part of, this will strengthen the entire profession and add ranks of dedicated professionals who are willing to put their time and effort to learn and grow to their specialities. Overall, it is very important to belong to a professional association
because they can be very helpful and beneficial to the members when continuing with their career and education to help them grow and thrive.
