Discussion Thread: Human Behavior and Behavior Management
Challenging Classroom Behavior
A challenging classroom behavior refers to actions or conducts exhibited by students that disrupt the learning environment and make it difficult for teachers to effectively manage the classroom. These behaviors can vary in nature and severity, making it challenging for educators to address them appropriately. Behavior does not occur in a random fashion, it is done purposely (Maag, 2018). One common challenging classroom behavior I experience in the middle school setting is poor homework completion. Poor homework completion can be a common challenging behavior because students may struggle to understand the material covered in class, may have challenges managing their time effectively, may experience a lack of quiet space and resources at home, may face learning disabilities and require additional support, may be impacted by health issues, may clash with a busy schedule and responsibilities, and may be distracted by technology and social media (Zolkoski & Lewis-Chiu, 2019).
Ineffective Management
Relying solely on the medical model might lead to interventions that focus on medical treatments or accommodations without addressing underlying motivational or environmental factors. An over emphasis on medical explanations for poor homework completion may neglect the impact of psychosocial support (Maag, 2018). Treating poor homework completion a "challenging behavior" might result in behavioral interventions that overlook the root causes, such as the lack of comprehending and understanding. This can lead to ineffective interventions. The concept of control, such as excessive monitoring, may create anxiety, avoidance, and resistance which hinders the positive approach to completing homework. Applying personal standards without considering individual differences may result in unrealistic expectations that do not address student needs related to homework completion. Ignoring contextual factors, such as home environment or family support, may lead to interventions that do not consider the external challenges students face outside of school (Maag, 2018). Neglecting cultural influences on homework completion may lead to misinterpretations of behavior that do not consider cultural contexts.
Each impediment, when not adequately addressed, can contribute to ineffective management of poor homework completion. Effective strategies should consider a holistic approach that takes into account medical, behavioral, motivational, cultural, and contextual factors to develop interventions that are tailored
to the unique needs of students. Colossians 3:23 says "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters". (KJB, 2019). This verses emphasizes the importance of putting effort and dedication into one's work, suggesting that completing tasks diligently is a reflection of a
deeper, self commitment.
