Sampling Worksheet
Name: Ashley Araco
State your hypothesis:
Use of acupuncture during the three stages of labor results in greater pain management, as opposed to pharmacological treatment alone.
Describe the target population. This is the population to which you hope to generalize
Parturient women
Describe the source population. This is the population from which you will choose your sample
Parturient women in New York
Describe the sample population. This is the population asked to participate
Parturient women in Nassau County, NY asked to participate
Describe the study population or sample. This is the population who consents to participate
Women in Nassau County, NY who agree to participate in the study. All women registered to delivery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Mount Sinai South Nassau and North Shore University Hospital will be emailed and asked to participate.
How will sample be selected? Probability or non-probability sampling? What method? Why did you choose this method?
The sample will be selected through probability sampling in which everyone has an equal chance to be a part of study. This avoids biases and permits estimate of sampling error. The specific method utilized will
be stratified sampling which will organize women close to term by ethnicity and race and pick every 5
th
individual. Stratifying into groups then randomly assigning allows a general proportion to adequately represent race and ethnicity by proportion in the sample.
What is the approximate size of the source population?
(
Estimate!
Use critical thinking!
) Briefly explain how you came up with this number.
N = __50,000_
While NY is a populated state. For this study the population is limited to not only women in Nassau County NY but women in childbearing years (between the ages of 15-44). Also, not every woman in NY between the ages of 15-44 is pregnant. It is estimated around 695,183 women live in Nassau County. As indicated by New York State Department of Health, per 1000 women ages 15-44 around 71.9 women are pregnant. Thus, by dividing 695,183 by 1000 and multiplying this number by 71.9 it can be concluded around 50,000 women in Nassau County NY are pregnant. “Department of Health.”

What is a realistic sample size?
Briefly explain why you think this is realistic.
n = _1000__
While a good sample size is usually 10% of the population. With a population size of 50,000 – 10% would be 5000 which is not realistic for this study. However, sampling 1000 people should produce fairly
accurate results. Sampling more than 1000 people won’t add much to the accuracy given the extra time and money it will cost. In addition,
very large samples tend to transform small differences into statistically significant differences - even when they are clinically insignificant. Thus, a sample size of 1000 is a realistic size that will still provide sufficient evidence of reliability and validity.
It is worth noting that if time and money were not a barrier, a sample size calculator would be utilized to obtain a more accurate sample size.
Discuss external validity and if you will be able to generalize your findings. Why or why not?
I think such findings validate the notion that acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment alone and/or in combination with conventical therapies. Which can be generalized to claim that acupuncture can be used to treat a variety of instances where prolonged or intense pain is present such as with migraines, arthritis, or postoperative pain.
