Occupation Based Models/Frames of Reference Template
ACOTE Standard: B.2.11, B.3.2
Explanation
: During the course of the semester, this class will cover overarching theories and frames of reference guiding
occupational therapy assessment and intervention. This is an ungraded learning activity that you will submit regularly
throughout the term, which is designed to reinforce key concepts and information that will be assessed through the
Signature Assignment, other assignments, and the Midterm and Final Exams. It is strongly recommended that students
complete this activity in groups to allow for discussion and clarification of concepts (but individual submission is required).
Occupation Based Models/Frames of Reference (FOR)
MODEL/FOR: ________Occupational Adaptation Model_______________________________
Model/FOR Component
Definitions
Focus of the Model/FOR
It emphasizes on the person's interaction with the natural
setting for occupational performance
Assumptions
OAM assumes that individuals have the desire to master
activity and gain the environmental control
Main Concepts
The Occupational Adaptation Model focuses on core
concepts of the profession within the occupations and their
modalities
View of the Person
It states that the person consists of three systems
sensorimotor, cognitive, and psychosocial that interact with
occupational environment like physical, social, and cultural
View of Occupation
It defines occupation as self-perceived meaningful activities
that require active participation and lead to a product
View of Environment
OAM assumes that individuals have the desire to master
activity and gain environmental control. It emphasizes on
the person's interaction with the natural setting for
occupational performance
FUNCTION/DYSFUNCTION CONTINUUM
How does this Model/FOR define healthy or
optimal functioning?
How does this Model/FOR define
Dysfunction/Disability?
The healthy part is that the person
makes internal adaptive response to the
situation and creates an occupational
response
Imbalance between the desire and
demand for mastery could lead to
inability to adapt to an occupational
challenge, therefore dysfunction
GUIDE FOR EVALUATION-What is the focus of evaluation? What tools are available?
Evaluating is when when ordinary response is insufficient to master the activity,
and is evaluated in relation to the concept of relative mastery
GUIDE FOR INTERVENTION-What is the focus of intervention? What tools are available?
During treatment planning, the client chooses meaningful activities that he/she
would like to master. Treatment focuses on the self-chosen activities and the
client’s environment and roles. The evaluation will be based on the concept of
relative mastery
CHANGE AND MOTIVATION-According to the Model/FOR, how does change occur?
The Occupational Adaptation Model postulates that personal adaptation is a human
phenomenon that is constantly in a process characterized by disorder and order, in
other words, it’s always changing
STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF THE Model/FOR
Strengths; looks at the whole person, people are always adapting
Weaknesses; client has to have some understanding how to adapt to a challenge
COMPARE AND CONTRAST THIS Model/FOR WITH THE OTHERS STUDIED:
Identify overlapping concepts between this and
other models
The Occupational Adaptation Model has
similarities with the CMOP-E model
because they both look at the person as a
whole
Identify concepts unique to this model
The Model shows what occupational
therapy is about, it integrates the
profession's historical practice with
contemporary interventions and methods
