The first service provided by Pennsylvania’s parent training and information center (also known as PEAL), is connection to a trained Family Resource Specialist who aid families in need via phone, e-mail, or in-person meetings. This professional can help families of children with disabilities navigate the difficulties they face, as well as help them understand what rights the child has and how to ensure they have what they need at school. A second service PEAL provides is training across Pennsylvania on important topics. Some of these topics include developing a strong IEP, maximizing communication and learning for your child, and navigating
physical and behavioral health settings. When browsing their website, you will find that they offer 25 different training sessions and also have the option for a representative to call you and discuss a training topic they might not currently offer. This is a great resource for parents who may be struggling with a specific aspect of their child’s disability, or just needs a little more information. A third resource they offer is a calendar of disability related events across the state. This resource may be good to connect families to each other and allows children to get to know others with their same disability. The website alone is a great resource, as it provides links, articles and an abundance of information regarding physical, emotional, learning, cognitive and sensory disabilities for babies all the way up to young adults, or age 26.
