Occupation Based Models/Frames of Reference Template ACOTE Standard: B.2.11, B.3.2 Explanation : During the course of the semester, this class will cover overarching theories and frames of reference guiding occupational therapy assessment and intervention. This is an ungraded learning activity that you will submit regularly throughout the term, which is designed to reinforce key concepts and information that will be assessed through the Signature Assignment, other assignments, and the Midterm and Final Exams. It is strongly recommended that students complete this activity in groups to allow for discussion and clarification of concepts (but individual submission is required). Occupation Based Models/Frames of Reference (FOR) MODEL/FOR: ____________MOHO___________________________ Model/FOR Component Definitions Focus of the Model/FOR Is an occupation-focused, evidence-based, client-centered approach to OT practice Assumptions volition: the motivation for occupation. habituation: the process by which occupation is organized into patterns or routines. performance capacity: the physical and mental abilities that underlie skilled occupational performance Main Concepts MOHO seeks to explain how occupation is motivated, patterned and performed. By offering explanations of such diverse phenomena, MOHO offers a broad and integrative view of human occupation View of the Person It is concerned on how people participate in daily life View of Occupation Conceptualizes OT as a process in which practitioners support client engagement in occupations View of Environment The environment can significantly impact occupational behavior. Motivation, organization, and occupational performance are all influenced by the environment. The environment includes contextual characteristics such as physical, social, cultural, economic, and political features
FUNCTION/DYSFUNCTION CONTINUUM GUIDE FOR EVALUATION-What is the focus of evaluation? What tools are available? GUIDE FOR INTERVENTION-What is the focus of intervention? What tools are available? How does this Model/FOR define healthy or optimal functioning? How does this Model/FOR define Dysfunction/ Disability? This model defines healthy and optimal functioning due to the holistic approach and seeing the person as a whole and not only focusing on the disability of the person It looks at key areas of function using a systems model as its basis – this systemic function/dysfunction of all aspects of an individual's occupation provides the structure for the OT and guides their interventions The focus of evaluation is to detect any areas of concern that the patient might be experiencing and evaluate them to find the best way to treat the patient. Some tools would be engaging in the environment that the patient feels comfortable in and using patterns that the patient does to apply it to the solution The intervention process consists of services provided by occupational therapy practitioners in collaboration with clients to facilitate engagement in occupation related to health, well-being, and achievement of established goals consistent with the various service delivery models Tools consists of identifying and realizing aspirations; satisfying needs; and changing or coping with contextual factors
CHANGE AND MOTIVATION-According to the Model/FOR, how does change occur? STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF THE Model/FOR COMPARE AND CONTRAST THIS Model/FOR WITH THE OTHERS STUDIED: Add Additional Notes, Diagrams, Etc. to support your studies here: Input is defined as when an individual attends to information of interest or relevance within their environment and then acts upon it with an output, or occupation. By interacting with the environment, a person receives feedback input which creates change over time One of the strengths of MOHO is its focus on the motivation for daily activities and how they are organized and performed. It also recognizes the importance of the person-environment interaction in shaping occupational behavior A limitation of MOHO is the lack of quantitative tools for decision-making in underdeveloped and developing countries Identify overlapping concepts between this and other models Moho the first occupation- based model to explain occupation and occupational problems PEOP is a client- centered and top- down model, focusing on the relationship between individual, group and community Identify concepts unique to this model It utilizes a top-down holistic approach to looking at the individual, their meaningful activities or occupations, and relationship with their environment
