Hello all,
Describe an experience within your community related to one or more of the eight dimensions
of wellness in which bias had an impact.
The eight dimensions of wellness are emotional, physical, financial, social, occupational, environmental, intellectual, and spiritual. Each dimension impacts an individual's health, well-
being, and quality of life. Neglecting any dimension over time can negatively affect health, well-
being, and overall quality of life. Each dimension can impact individuals positively or negatively.
(Kroll, 2023). For this week’s discussion I have decided to talk about emotional wellness. The Covid epidemic brought with it a slew of mental problems, particularly among children and teens. I'm not sure whether this is exclusive to my community, but it appears like there is a lot of bias associated with mental health, especially when it is tied to such a global tragedy.
How does having a better understanding of bias influence your thoughts about this experience and about wellness?
One of the most significant things I think I learned from this, since I work in the healthcare industry and it hit so close to home, was to be more aware of my emotions, both in particular situations and in everyday life. In terms of understanding wellness, I think it helped me
learn how to better reflect on things that could help or hurt me in the future, as well as how to become more conscious of my surroundings and pay closer attention to how everything makes me feel.
What did you take away from this experience, and how did it influence your understanding of wellness?
I have become more conscious of the prejudices surrounding invisible illnesses and how they may affect how we interact with people who are in these kinds of situations after witnessing
firsthand how these various disorders can affect even the smallest areas of someone's life and learning about the rise in suicide rates and inadequate treatment received by those who sorely need it. It makes sense from one point-of-view that someone might think that people with mental
health disorders need more stability or a better home life. I understand the frustration that comes with not being able to control the vast array of emotions and behaviors connected to these diseases. If we are more conscious of our own biases and how they could influence our thought processes, we might be able to approach situations with a more open mind and perhaps even treat
those others more successfully without passing judgment. References: Kroll, M., M. (2023). Do You Know the 8 Dimensions of Wellness and What They Say about Your Well-being? University of New Hampshire
