HIIT 130 Module 3 Assignment - Essay Questions (20 points) 1. Review the AHIMA record retention standards, which can be found in table 8.4. What are the recommended retention periods for the master patient index, adult health records, minor health records, and register of deaths? Why do you think AHIMA established these recommended retention periods? Do you agree with them? Justify your choice. 10 points The recommended retention period for the master patient index is permanent. I believe AHIMA established this for several reasons. A permanent MPI retention period ensures that patient information remains accessible and up to date throughout their lifespan, supporting continuity of care and informed decision-making by health providers. It also facilitates the analysis of health trends, disease patterns, and healthcare outcomes over a span of time. I do agree with this retention period because MPI is such a vital component to a healthcare information system. It contains unique identifiers and essential demographic information that would be useful for years to come. The adult health records have a recommended retention period of ’10 years after most recent encounter’ and for minor health records its ‘age of majority plus statute of limitations.’ For both records that period allows healthcare providers to refer to past medical history, diagnoses, treatments, and outcomes when treating returning patients or addressing ongoing concerns. It could also facilitate long-term research endeavors and quality improvement initiatives. Register of deaths has the same retention period as MPI, permanent. Having a permanent retention period allows for accurate documentation of mortuary statistics, supports legal and administrative purposes, and facilitates genealogical research. While I do think death records could eventually take up space it is good to keep them permanently. Genealogy has become very big and death records play a big part in that. 2.
