Paragraph one: Utilizing the data collected, discuss a social factor that might impact what groceries are purchased. Try to be as specific to your community as possible (location, availability, poverty levels, etc.).
With 19.7% of people in my community living in poverty, the social factor would evidently be poverty. While families and households continuing to shop at Walmart for generic food items have become challenging with the current economic state brought on by Covid 19 restrictions, unemployment/layoffs, rising cost of living, and supply decrease or limited supplies. As of “March 2020, consumer price indexes for food at home posted some of the largest monthly increases of recent years” (Mead, Ransom, Reed, and Sager (2020))
. This alongside the historic decline the pandemic brought in yield in the majority of substantial economies.
The U.S. GDP plummeted “8.9 percent the second quarter of 2020”
, which is one of the single greatest single-quarter loss in over 70 years (The White House (2022)). Taking these factors into account the lack of income or limited amount of income and rising food cost, housing cost, transportation and gas costs, utilities, and other basic necessities many people in my community have
been confronted with poverty.

Paragraph two: Utilizing the data collected, discuss
another
social factor that might impact what groceries are purchased. Try to be as specific to your community as possible (location, availability, poverty levels, etc.)
A second social factor that impacts my community is education. According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2022), only 16% of people in my community have an education level of a bachelor’s degree or higher. Additionally, 81.4% a high school diploma, GED, or associates degree in my community. With those calculations that leave 2.6% of people in my community that have less than a high school education. Education plays a key factor in health and therefor the lack of education can lead to unhealthy choices. According to Tulane University (2021), generally those who have the means to acquire good education spanning their lives gravitate to a healthier lifestyle than those who do not. Education, not only gives people an opportunity of advancement, placing these individuals in preferential financial status to procure good health care, providing them with more quality information on how to manage their own health (Tulane University (2021)).

Paragraph three: Discuss how a community health nurse (CHN) could use one of the 17
intervention categories from the Public Health Intervention Wheel to address areas of food security.
After assessing Niles and McEwen (2019) definitions and discussion of the Public Health nursing 17 interventions, one in particular jumped out at me, Health teaching. According to Niles
and McEwen (2019), health teaching is defined as “Communicating facts, ideas, and skills that change knowledge, attitudes, values, beliefs, behaviors, and practices of individuals, families, systems, and/or communities.” Community health nurses can focus on collaborating with local schools in educating children and adolescents on healthier food choices available. Teaching about food choices, health, and resources are essential in early education and benefits these children. This in turn encourages these children to take what they have learned home to share with their families.
