Report
This week’s discussion post we are focusing on types of violence and human trafficking. We are to discuss the patient population we work with on a day-to-day basis and patient populations we have worked with in the past. I as a Labor and delivery nurse I have seen many formed of violence, however I have seen more intimate partner violence and human trafficking in my last 6 years of labor and delivery as a travel nurse. I have seen intimate partner violence with many female patients of many different ages, cultural backgrounds and socio-economic status’. Weather they are teenagers or middle-aged mothers, African American, Caucasian, Native American, wealthy, middle class, and even impoverished backgrounds are at risk for intimate partner violent. I also have seen young girls that are human trafficking victims from impoverished and middle class socio-economic backgrounds no matter their race or culture. These patient’s tend to come in to the obstetrical triage or OBED with a supposed support person that answers all the questions asked that a nurse ask the patient to answer. Which is usually one red flag that alerts us something is not right. Another is a possible lack of prenatal care during the pregnancy for patients that are human trafficking victims. Screening for violence is part of our intake as labor and delivery nurses on every admission we do. We tend to a certain questions when the patient is alone. “Do you feel safe at home?” “Do you have any concerns about safety at home?” “Is there any history of domestic or sexual violence?” “Has your partner, spouse, or support person every harmed you or your family?” “Has your partner, spouse, or support person ever threatened to hurt you or your family?” “ Has your partner, spouse, or support person ever made you feel controlled or isolated?” Usually if we are unable to ask these questions in private away from the support person we either ask the person to step out (which sometimes doesn’t work and we get push back) or we ask the patient in the restroom when they are leaving a urine sample. Sometimes when we have a concern about an intimate partner violent or case of human trafficking some hospitals will leave colored stickers in the restroom for the patient to put on their urine specimens to indicate if they are in danger or need help. Along with screening questions, we have been trained to assess for signs of violence and trauma of our patients. As for the question of “do you believe these screenings are typically completed in detail” and explain my answer as to why. I myself and the numerous amount of colleagues I have worked with are very diligent is these screening questions and assessment tools we use for screening for violence for our patients safety. Because we want to ensure the safety of not just our patient the mother but also the child that she will be taking home with her.
