HIM 500: Health Policy and Management

Based on the readings, consider generally what the future of health information management might hold. How will advancements in technology affect the field?
The future of health information management might have much to offer in managing healthcare costs and in improving the quality of care (Fichman et al., 2011). Health information management can be beneficial to patients who need help managing healthcare costs, especially for those with chronic illness. The system should be able to keep track of billing, payments and other cost making things easier for billing staff members in terms of not having to remember the correct price along with other health information in the patient.
The healthcare information technology and processing environment is changing at lightning speed and is only expected to accelerate (Fenton et al., 2017). Presently, from medical records on paper to digital, the limits medical professionals had such as accessing records from billing or having a separate file room for patient records. In the future, saving information would hopefully be more secure in saving information in the healthcare field.
Reflect on one of the concepts you learned in this course. What makes this concept stick out to you?
A core responsibility of the HIM profession is ensuring the right information is provided to the right people to enable quality patient care (Stanfill & Marc, 2019). It shows how technology is helping improve healthcare through organization, security and accessibility. This way, patients can feel secure, and staff can organize data digitally in a secure manner. This was one of the concepts I learned throughout this course along with the benefits of having different health information technology in healthcare. Before, I only knew about EHRs, but it was great to learn about critial information systems (CIS) and why this is an important way to collect and store data along with
other roles and technology in the field of health information management. The reason why this stood out to me was due to having a glimpse of what happens behind the screens of hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
Finally, consider how you will apply your new knowledge to your program at SNHU. What about to your current or future profession?
This knowledge could be applied to any organization that deals with sensitive information. Rules
and regulations of HIPAA should be upheld as a part of whatever organization I apply to in the future. Regarding my future profession in the field of public health, I believe that this knowledge
would be beneficial in terms of where I end up working. For example, if I work with a hospital institution, then this would be beneficial in terms of keeping patients’ records and information safe or if I am working outside of the healthcare field, respecting information will still apply even if there is no third-party involvement such as patients.
