1. What do you think is Barbara’s main reason for approaching Bill about HIM’s exclusion from the decision to purchase a new Electronic Health Record System? I think Barbara’s main reason for approaching Bill about HIM being excused would be to learn more about this new system and how or if it would affect the HIM department. 2. It seems as though HIM would be integral in assisting with a decision such as purchasing an Electronic Health Record System. Why do you think HIM was excluded from the review process? I think HIM was excluded from the review process, for they are essential and know what the EHR system should and should not have. When Barbara started pointing out what the new system was missing, her colleagues did not look thrilled at first until they realized its importance. 3. Barbara presented several questions regarding system features during her discussion with Bill. Do you think these questions helped Bill understand Barbara’s concerns? I don't think those questions helped Bill at first until Barbara went over what was wrong with the system. It was during the meeting that he seemed to realize the improvement of the HIM department and the concerns Barbara had. 4. What can an organization do to prevent exclusion of key subject matter experts (SME)? From a planning perspective, can you think of any techniques or tools that can be used to ensure correct resources are engaged? An organization can come up with various guidelines and policies when it comes to meetings for topics that include the key subject matter experts. Have those experts involved in important meetings, even if it doesn't seem like it is in their field, for they might be a prime contributor to the meeting. A technique could be to send an email to department heads and vice heads about the meeting topic and what is to be discussed. It would then be up to them to join if they felt the need to, unless the meeting was mandatory.
