Directions:
Answer each question below in paragraph form. Provide details and give a complete response. Reference in APA style all information from any and all sources, including the lectures, textbook, websites, etc. 1.
Describe your food habits. List core foods that you consume. Discuss which components of the consumer food choice model affect your food habits and choices.
I believe that overtime, I have developed great food habits. Health and wellness are major goals of mine and in the past, I have worked with nutritionist to develop healthy eating habits. The core foods I consume have to be protein, fats, and carbs. This consists of chicken, steak, cottage cheese, beef sticks, protein powder, pasta, cheese, bread, and salad. The components of the consumer food choice model that affect my food habits and choices would be price, health, and information. I always have a budget when I do my weekly shopping, so I try to get the best food within my range. I also eat with my health in mind. It is important to give your body all the nutrients it needs so that is my main goal when putting together meals to eat.
2.
How do you think your culture affects your food intake? *This question does not require an in-text citation. *
I don’t really think my culture affects my food intake. I never feel like I have to eat a specific food or eat a specific amount daily due to my culture. I know some cultures are a little stricter in the sense that they can’t eat a certain meat due to their cultural values and beliefs and I also know some cultures can’t eat at specific times due to rituals, but I never have really experienced that. The one effect my culture has on my food intake would be lent. At this time of the year, I do
tend to give up a specific food or specific drink for a few months until lent is over.
3.
Describe the Omnivore’s Paradox.
The Omnivore’s Paradox describes the conflicting evolutionary pressures of omnivores, including humans, regarding food choices. It centers around the tension between the need for dietary variety as well as the need for caution when trying new foods. In one way, by consuming a variety of foods, people can access a broader range of nutrients essential to health. In another way, some unknown foods not tried before can harbor diseases, and disagree with ones digestive system. Understanding the paradox helps us appreciate the complexities of human food choices and how our relationship with food has evolved over time. Fischler, C. (1980). Food, appetite, and culture. Cultural Nutrition.
4.
Provide the World Health Organization’s definition of health. Give an example of at least
2 foods that you consume to stay healthy.
The World Health Organization’s definition of health is “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” This emphasizes that health is not just about illnesses, but also includes mental and social aspects. Two foods I regularly consume to stay healthy are berries. They are rich with vitamins and offer many health benefits including immune boosting and improving mental clarity. This is something that can easily be added to yogurt or even smoothies. I also love consuming protein smoothies. This helps
me consume more protein daily which allows my metabolism to stay effective and will help build my muscle tissue. World Health Organization. (n.d.). Constitution of the World Health Organization

5.
Define folk illness. Do you (or your family members) associate any conditions or symptoms with folk illnesses? If yes, describe the folk illness and the cause of the illness.
Folk illness refers to psychiatric symptoms recognized within a specific cultural group. These
illnesses can stop someone from using formal health care systems because healthcare workers do not really understand the illness they are dealing with since it is so specific to their culture. My family and I do not suffer or associate with any conditions or symptoms of folk illnesses.
