Consider the concept of telehealth. Answer the following questions:
1. Are there situations in which you would prefer to consult with a health professional on
the phone or via a video chat rather than visiting a doctor’s office or emergency room? If
so, when? Personally, I do think there are situations in which I would prefer to consult with someone in person, versus via a telehealth appointment. I have Kaiser Permanente
health care and they are definitely one of the networks that adopted telehealth appointments. Through experience, I personally do not like these types of appointments. I feel like when I have had appointments via telehealth in the past, the meeting feels less personal and it seems easier for the provider to steamroll over me and make the appointment quick. For appointments in which I actually have a concern that needs thorough or lengthy discussions, I tend to prefer just going in person. But if the symptoms I’m experiencing aren’t very serious, then telehealth appointments can be
super useful to work into a busy schedule. 2. Are there circumstances in which a virtual medical visit or hospital stay would be inferior to an in-person interaction? If so, when? I think this sort of goes along with what I mentioned previously, when I have a larger health concern that I feel like might require
an in depth discussion with my provider, I like to go in person. I feel like it is harder for the provider to dismiss me when I am sitting right in front of them! 3. Consider Topol’s scenario (Box 9.1) in which a patient notices an unusual mole and is able to upload a photo of the mole via a smartphone app and find out in minutes (based on computer algorithms) if it appears to be harmless or if he or she should seek medical attention for it. What are the advantages of quick access to medical information of this nature? What are the disadvantages? Quick access to medical information can have many benefits. Sometimes, patients put off check ups due to their busy work schedules and busy lives. This can lead to medical emergencies going unnoticed sometimes. The use of online telehealth appointments in situations like this can lead to the early diagnosis of diseases/illnesses which allows more treatment options/ a better chance at recovery. These types of appointments can also be more cost effective for some patients and more accessible to patients who live in remote areas or may not have access to efficient transportation methods. Patients who fit these categories may have otherwise put off seeking out medical attention for something like an unusual mole, turning preventable diseases into detrimental ones. 4. How might your life and health be affected by easy-to-use mobile health evaluators that could instantly tell you your blood alcohol level, your heart rate, your blood sugar level, sleeping patterns, and so on, and provide advice on responding effectively? Easy-
to-use health evaluators that could instantly provide results could save both the providers and patients a lot of time, thus also potentially saving lives. Something that could instantly tell you results like that of your heart rate could possibly prevent things like a heart attack. Medical emergencies like a heart attack can happen very quickly, oftentimes before a patient is able to get medical attention by walking into the ER to check heart rate before receiving treatment. If you already know you’re having a medical emergency it could save time.
5. How might your life be affected if medical visits more often occur via telemedicine than in person? As a patient, this could save me time and resources. As a medical provider, this could potentially lead to salary changes, changes in work hours, or loss of certain medical staff positions that are responsible for aspects of in person appointments.
