Reflect on one or more examples of work-life programs you know, have observed, or have participated in. Recommend one or more work-life programs in a one- to two-page paper (400 - 600 words). With your recommendation, cite the benefits of such a program and recommend at least 2 different metrics that the organization may track to measure whether the program has been successful or not.
Work-life programs are among the many areas in a company that can improve employee productivity at work. The programs may seem costly for the organization at first due to increasing nonwork-related function costs; however, this may benefit the company in the long run since this may improve the worker’s productivity and enhance a better fit between work and nonwork demand (Cascio & Boudreau, 2011). From my recent experience, the two successfully implemented work-life programs are a hybrid work schedule and free Flu and COVID vaccine shots with 4 hours of compensation time. Both of these benefits are well received within my organization. At the beginning of COVID, remote work became many workplace solutions due to social distancing; however, some companies, including mine, noticed the advantages and disadvantages of remote working. Therefore, my company tries to capture all the positives of remote working and improve the negatives. As a result, they came up with a hybrid work schedule, in which employees are allowed to have half their work week in the office and the other half outside of their office. Moreover, they even let the employee decide on office days themself. My colleague and I felt it was a productive move for the company since we could optimize our commute time due to the flexibility. The metrics for evaluating this hybrid work schedule is the overall employee engagement with each other. More concrete metrics can be the number of people attending meetings, the number of emails sent, and the number of deadline extensions (Choudury et al., 2022).
By offering employee Flu and COVID vaccines along with compensation time, my company would hope to decrease the number of sick day leaves for the employees. Several studies have already shown companies demonstrated economic benefits from the vaccine shots (Morales et al., 2004). My company wants to follow suit and encourage employees to take COVID and Flu vaccine shots by bringing medical staff on-site to give shots and offering paid shots at pharmacy stores. In addition, the employee can have a compensation time of four hours on the day receiving the shots. Although the vaccine shots and four hours off may cost the company financially, absenteeism due to sickness should be lower, saving the company money. The metrics for measuring the Flu and COVID shots is the decrease in the number of sickness absenteeism days in the company. Overall, these two work-life programs, a hybrid working schedule and Flu and COVID vaccine shots, greatly benefited my company. From an employee perspective, I am grateful that the company is offering these benefits, and I fully take advantage of these benefits. As a successful work-life program, the company and employees should benefit from the program. Reference: Cascio, W.F., &Boudreau, J. W. (2011).
